Where did the word Woke come from?

Other artists who said they were influenced by Lead Belly include John Lennon, George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Elvis, Johnny Cash, The Beach Boys, the Creedon's Clearwater Revival, errol Smith, Led Zeppelin, Tom Petty, The Grateful Dead, and, as I said, Kurt Kobay. You know, our chattering classes, and I include myself among them have been poor caretakers of the English language and the word woke as well

I don't know, just the kind of experience that when you're growing up, you want to just be exposed to this kind of stuff. So, yeah, I know a lot about him. In fact, there was a guy in San Francisco who had an artistic name that was in named after him, but he added something to it, so I know he's in the world, and I had no idea of the songs he wrote for pop culture, like you mentioned

Like a lot of us, you're probably thinking, oh yeah, I've been using that word since the who are old enough. Actually, a lot of the younger people have been attributing the word woke or the usage of it in the black culture. To Erica Badu, who's a singer, an RB singer from the she coined it in her song where she literally said I stay woke, meaning I stay aware

You know what I mean? It's more about being aware of your history and knowledge of self and that type of thing. Now, you know what I mean? Being aware of how the society really works and how the system really operates, regardless of what we're shown on TV and what the media portrays and all that type of stuff. But it's a really good swell. I like this one

You know, it's crazy because woke, I think someone else said it here for a very long time was our way of saying, stay aware, stay alert of where you were, what neighborhood you are, whether it was gang related or gang infested, or if it was just an all white neighborhood. So we would say, hey, stay woke. Wow. And nowadays, it means a lot of other things. It's stay woke of how society really treats you

Some actually played cops and stuff like that, but it was like getting a little crazy. And then after that there's other groups that popped up and became more prominent or were already there and became more prominent with the Black Panthers and Nation of Islam and it kind of balances things out then to come up a little further. When I was a younger man and gangster rap was out of control, it was doing what it was supposed to do
