Is Diversity and Inclusion Work Worth it Anymore?

And from where I'm sitting, people, they don't like seeing this stuff, but at the same tiye, they're like, well, it just is what it is. I'm just going to survive through it. I'm just going to live through it. And that's just how it is. Which is fine, right?

And then ultimately, I thought about that, and I came to the conclusion no. And there's two very important reasons why. One, I don't think anything I would say about your post would shift you in any way. After doing this now and doing dialogue for a very long time, I've gotten pretty good at knowing whether or not you can be engaged with someone and shift worldview in a certain way, and I don't think that's going to be the case with you here

I’m just here for the popcorn.

You being a middle aged white man, I have nothing to add to this. But I just want to hear everyone's point of view. Nothing to add to this because I have no right to add anything to this. You um but I love hearing other points of view so that I can see and understand where other people are coming from. So therefore, please pass the popcorn. I'm just here to watch

Ah. Ouch. Jordan no, no, no. I'm gonna say this is one middle aged white guy to another. I know you're being tongue in cheek, but you can't rely on your white privilege to excuse yourself from conversations about diversity, equity and inclusion. I get you may not have the experience or the particular insightful opinion that you want to share, but don't fall back on, well, I'm a middle aged white guy, so I got nothing to add

And that's playing out a variety of ways, both in staff hiring, but also the way we treat our audiences. And it's important. I'm learning a lot. I continue to learn a lot. And I also really appreciate hearing from my colleagues with different backgrounds, experiences and races than my own that it's been eye opening. And I always appreciate the opportunity to learn and to become not only a better person, but a better man, mentor and create a better and more welcoming workplace

And that I don't know if many of us want to face is that our work has to demand that people give up privilege in order for historically marginalized identities to truly be on a level playing field. And like I said, that's the hardest part of the work because, as you know, most people don't want to give up their privilege for anything, even if it's just the smallest bit of discomfort. So, again, thank you for the public and open, Allyship

And when I looked at different companies, the key for me was looking at the CEO, interviewing the CEO and just asking the question, is this CEO listening? Does this CEO listen to other points of view? Is he or she listening to me right now? If they don't, most likely a diversity and inclusion program I just don't think is going to work. Now that may sound very too judgmental, but in my experience that's what's going to happen

Maybe once I mean, if you're if it really I'm just not going to reply anymore because instead of, like, trying to I i don't don't know, I just feel like you're making it not worth it. I mean, even when the 76th street kid tried to put his point of view, you just said, oh, I just want you to stop talking. I just want you to stop. Stop because you're making it so bad

Even if they say outwardly they care about diversity and inclusion, you can't really trust it. Because when it comes to the rubber meeting the road, they usually cave when it gets hard. And I just literally went through this myself with an organization I had poured a lot of time and energy into, not as an employee, but I'm a member, and I pay dues as my local chamber. And they basically just admitted a hate group, a local hate group to the chamber

You. Jordan, I want you to imagine a scenario where someone is sitting at your workplace and they're discussing the calendar for the year, and someone is bold enough, has the risk tolerance and the mental emotional labor capacity to say to the people at your workplace this calendar preferences religious holidays that are based in Christianity

So I totally hear you on the performative nature of these institutions. They do it all the time. They tokenize marginalized people all the time in order to make themselves look like they're doing work that they actually aren't doing. Totally hear you there. I also hear you on the white women and that particular intersection of identity, carrying certain societal privilege with it in the US. And leaning on that white femininity to get access to things to be valued in certain ways that other people are not

This in no way, shape or form negates the intent and your effort in the work that you have done with the organization or organizations you've been with and are currently with. I'm just responding to the subject matter at hand and hoping that in the future, as these positions continue to evolve and the concept continues to evolve, that real, meaningful change can occur

@Her_Sisu @tiyerobinson what does the SCOTUS ruling mean for the future of diversity programs?

Not everybody, but there are a lot of corporations that I think are operating that capacity. So for them to get a case like this handed to them, will they take this and say, hey, we can't have a diversity program anymore? The Supreme Court tells us we have to be colorblind, that we can't have these race programs? Are they going to be hiding behind us now and really dismantling their diversity programs?
@tiyerobinson

@Phil

But they can't say that out loud because of how it sounds. You're going to have those folks in leadership just totally take it and go, well, if they can't do that in college admissions and all this stuff has to go because the Supreme Court says so

Hey, this is J-L-I say because I've worked in specifically the industry of healthcare, I've worked at a number of different health systems between 2003 and this year. I'm on my 20th this is my 20th year. Yeah, 20th year anniversary. And so with that being said, I think about past conversations at different organizations that have been had in different meeting rooms with different executives from multiple different levels and layers within the organization
