The anniversary of a huge loss that never seems to heal.

Hi, I am Suzanne Alavi. I am a director, cinematographer, writer, producer, avoider procrastinator, and as I mentioned, a killer of all plants. Today is a really hard day for me, and it always a hard day every year. But this is the first time I've ever shared how I was feeling, really, with anyone or anything. Never did I really fully understand, and I guess I might not, how horrible it is to lose your home during a natural disaster

What it feels like to lose everything. #HurricaneKatrina #ClimateDisaster #AskSwell

It was just water bubbling up. It was just this decontextualized 24/7 feed of broll and everybody is vamping. Wolf Blitzer says they're so poor and so black. I'll never forget that moment in television news infamy but having covered a bunch of way too many natural disasters, I'll be honest, I think that we talk to people who have been victims of these disasters. We hear about what they've lost, and we do, we move on

Not that that means that you're crazy, but this guy was very self sufficient, almost kind of a survivalist in his mind. And I knew if there was one person that wouldn't leave on that street, it would have been him. So that's kind of how I discovered that my house was flooded, and it remained so for over ten days. So thank you so much. I have a lot to add, and I will. Thank you. Bye

@marklesserart Chatting about the anniversary of Katrina.

I was finally in a really great place because I was helping people and making really great work and telling people story, honest stories, honestly, without any kind of filter. And the editing facility I was working out of was literally ten minutes from my home. And at this point, everything was not digitized, so I lost all of my work. Luckily, since then, everyone is digitized and heavily backed up. So I look forward to hearing your thoughts and want to know why you love New Orleans

So you can write that book, so you can make that movie, so you can encourage and help others who's going through trauma of a loss. So to carry on another day, begin to change the hurt into happiness. Remember the good times you had in restoring that house, of how it looked at when you first bought it to the time that it was before you lost it in the storm that your smile comes of memories. That's important

And here you are reflecting on something that was so monumental for you, and you see as you unfold it, it's going to be probably as meaningful to you as it is to us as we listen, because it's in the telling that there's new discovery and new meaning
