Do we want sympathy or success?

But also what's going to carry me further beyond that person being there emotionally and supportive for me is seeing some success, seeing me move forward and healing through that adversity, that tough time, whatever it is that's going on. That's the context that I was thinking about this. But I'm curious to hear what you think about it. Are there any like, what is your answer for this? Do you seek sympathy or is success more important to you?

That you should push through tough times on your own when that's not how humans work. The fact is when we're going through a tough time, it is important to have validation that yes, what you're going through is difficult. And I sympathize with that. And what sometimes comes from a conversation like that is that you can get advice as well. That oh, you know, I went through a similar situation and you can do X-Y-Z maybe it'll help you along

Hi. Hope you're doing well. It's a very interesting question. I personally feel that I do look for sympathy. But if I had a choice, then I would choose success over sympathy. Because sympathy in the long run makes you feel worse about yourself because the other person doesn't really care about you, they're just feeling sorry for you. And one must realize the difference between empathy and sympathy

And so I have to leave and seek other environments that are more uplifting and match with who I am as a person. So anyways, when I look at that book, I think what you shared as far as the context for not wallowing in one's struggles or pain, that's probably where someone like him as a pastor will come at it from

But my thing would be when I think about success is what if that person that you're discussing this with, instead of sympathy helps you? Takes an opportunity to provide maybe a resource that you may need to overcome said difficult thing, if that's possible. That may not always fit depending on the situation or just doing something kind for you

I could call him when he was alive and share with him something I had experienced or was going through and he would say one of the first things he would do is acknowledge the human experience, which would be oh man, I know that p***** you off. Or OOH, I would be mad as h***. Or oh, that sucked. You know what? Situations like that make you want to say to somebody the following or do to somebody the following

Success is not to dominate, not to control, not to prove that I'm better than. But really, success opens the door to opportunity that were once closed, maybe still closed. So I think success just has many obstacles that are to lead you into the next chapter of your life

Even though sometimes as human beings, we can dangerously get into that kind of thought process if we're not careful. I'm not projecting, but just speaking from personal experience. But what keeps me humbled and grounded is understanding when I've been low and when I've gone through that low season or spot in life. And then when I see the overcoming in the triumph and the regaining of self and confidence and how it was just so important
