Do Comedians Rely On Vulgarity to be Funny?

article image placeholderUploaded by @MsColes77
So we have to give props to comedians like Chris Rock, Kevin Hart, Kat Williams, and others that do this for multiple shows per year and have done it for two decades or more. It's not easy to do

Are we just not entertained by life in general? I'm sure all of us could list some things going on in our lives that are very funny. So I just often wonder if we are requiring a new level of tasteless, raunchy comedy because we just don't care for anything outside of that. Like I said, I attended both of these comedy shows. I mean, they were good overall. There were some laughs in every show

And I'm telling you, in the last year or two, their content has gotten very unchristlike. And it's not me judging. It's just like, okay. Whereas they used to have really clean comedy, family friendly, like some of the just the silliest stuff. Now I see them getting into a whole lot of stuff that literally that to me, is opposite of anything Christlike. And so that's scary, too, when you used to turn on a comedian and be safe with it

And if you're looking to break into the entertainment business, then you have to do what you have to do. I did a swell about men dressing up as women, and I understood what everybody was saying, but it still upsets me. And so I was watching today, I was watching this interview that Omar Gooding did. Cuba Gooding jr's brother

I got that from my mom. So you're not going to hear too much about me anyway. I'm obviously going to share with my friends, but I don't really talk too much about myself, but especially about things like that. That's just how I am. I'm just not built like that. And to each his own. But I feel like that's one of the reasons why I just could never get into comedy like that

Oh, good conversation. As someone who has been a standup person from time to time, I even took a class, I've swelled about it here. I can only look at this through my lens, which is very specific. My humor is not at all in that vein. There are so many things that are funny in life that don't require, first of all, beating someone else up at their expense to make you look clever. That's one thing I really don't vibe with

@DearAuntyAng

You know, comedians like Sinbad and Bill Cosby that can still be hilarious without having to do any of that and still be very much relatable to their audience without having to go there. I think it takes more creativity and even more skill to be able to craft a joke that doesn't require somebody being naked, that doesn't require somebody being nasty or lewd. It doesn't require someone getting cussed out or something like that

So those were the types of jokes that I would send to other people to get their attention. I wasn't into clean comedy, I wasn't into clean movies, I wasn't into clean living, period. So therefore, nothing clean living attracted me. And so I get it. If you're surrounded by people who love vulgarity, then that's what's going to get their attention

They try to keep it clean by making jokes about owning pets, making jokes about sending your kids to school, raising kids, things that people with kids can relate to, but it just wasn't their comfort zone, and it was obvious, so but thank you so much, SIS. I know comedy isn't for everybody. Some folks just don't really get into it

Sometimes I wonder, I'm like, is this what people want? Are they demanding for these comedians to get on stage and be as nasty as they possibly can? Is this a consumer thing? Is this what we want to consume? Or is this just something that is trending amongst comedians? They see that one person did it, and they got a massive deal from that last stand up show they did, and they listened to the material that was presented in that stand up

It's great to hear a comedian touch on that and to present it in a way that can draw laughter at something that's really not funny, but you can laugh at it anyway. Even though you can't change it, you can laugh at it. And so I appreciate people like Chris Rock that do that kind of stuff

So, yeah, I guess maybe my expectations might have been a little lofty. If I'm not mistaken, I believe these were the same comedians that were on my last cruise that I took in 2016. So I think that this is just what they do. I don't think that these are the people you're going to see on, like I said, their own Netflix special or anything

What I loved about people like Rodney Dangerfield was that he had one punchline and he was able to run with it. And that's what makes a great comedian on my opinion. He always said like, oh, I don't get no respect. And then after that he said it. One time he's like, man, I took my wife to a dog show and she won. And I just started crying. I was laughing so hard. So for me, that makes a great comedian
