Obesity used to be uncommon. What happened?

article image placeholderUploaded by @MsColes77
And I noticed that as time has progressed, if we fast forward to 2023, it seems like we have a rising obesity epidemic in the United States, where obesity is starting to kind of be the majority culture here in this nation. And so I was wondering as a child of the 80s, like, what happened? How did we go from the occasional overweight person to almost a majority culture of overweight people?

And so we're consuming these things when we eat these chickens, we're consuming these additives and preservatives and antibiotics and hormones that have been injected into these animals before they were slaughtered. And so now we're seeing a rise in the healthcare industry of supplements and beverages and different products like that that will supposedly help your metabolism speed up so you can lose weight. Because we seem to be having so much trouble in the United States when it comes to losing weight. But what happened?

But I think these companies are having a fill day. They're filling our foods with GMOs and all kinds of stuff that you can't even pronounce. It's gotten away from being food stuff. And we're so focused on Body Positivity and you can't fat chain, quote unquote. And now the heat is off. The attention is off from these companies that have to explain where are you actually feeding us? Where do we actually put in our mouths? So it's a whole agenda

But the implications of people's obesity lead to shorter lifespans, problems with health, and expensive lifestyles to help us mitigate any further damage that's happened to our bodies because of the overuse of processed foods. So on one hand, we're in a revolution of celebration, which we need. On the other hand, we need to look at sort of the best version of ourselves that can be projected out without shaming people. But the food industry is just so corrupt

But I think that if we educate these populations on how to prepare healthy food for their family, they would be more inclined to go into that direction and also just improving access to these foods. Because I get it. A lot of these big grocery stores, supermarkets, don't want to move into lower income areas because they don't want to have to deal with shoplifting. And so I get that

Now suddenly certain people are meant to be skinny and certain people are not. And I'm not saying that all of us will be skinny, but what I'm saying is that there are things that we can do. Like you were saying with fasting. I agree with everything you said regarding fasting

Maybe short sighted

And I think now it's considered rude to even just say like, oh, look, you've gained weight, you've lost weight. Stop talking about people's weight. It doesn't matter anymore. Also, obesity, it was always a common thing. It's just that nobody but it was always common. Look it up. The statistics. In the early 2000s, obesity was up 34%. There was the President's challenge to get in the early ninety s to get kids into shape

Totally cool with the fact that you don't agree with our conversation, but I will say that, yeah, I pretty much hold fast to my thoughts because I have been the obese one that had to lose weight. And the funny thing, the interesting part was nobody said anything about my weight when I was big, but they had a lot to say about me when I started losing weight and getting healthy

We can fight, but we teach body positivity, which means we are teaching people to love themselves, which is great, but they're not going to live past 50 because they're going to die of a heart attack, diabetes, something is going to affect them. Because it's great to love your body, but what about getting healthier. So, yeah, lots of arguments going on, but honestly, I'll whisper it. There's a secret. There's a secret secret to weight loss

So it Begins…

Well, this is just my theory, but I'm pretty sure I'm right because I had plenty. My grandpa was one of those people, and that is people in the 70s were heavy smokers. Everybody smoked. You would probably be hard pressed to find a restaurant that didn't have smoking. So, yeah, their bodies were like, in crash mode from all the cigarettes they were smoking. And I don't know if I've ever seen I mean, fat smokers are few and far between

The Board is set the pieces are moving…

He got a brain tumor and he refused to change his diet. His son was sneaking fast food into him. And if you know anything about cancer and maybe I'll talk about that in the next well, if you know anything about cancer, cancer is curable and the doctor ain't going to cure it. They know how to kill it, or they think they know how to kill it, but they're not really going to kill it. They just kind of put it on pause

Gut brain connection

It's like Santa Claus is real kind of a thing, and it's just causing all kinds of problems. In the end, I don't think people should necessarily be fascinating people, but people that are overweight need to understand, like you're knocking 20 to 30 years off of your life, guaranteed 100%. It's scientifically proven. Now, a doctor won't say that because maybe they will, some doctors will, but I mean, they're there to sell drugs

Health usally becomes a concern later in life

And so later in life, and I came to it later in life, I didn't start worrying about my health until not, you know, probably in the last six or seven years, but once I highly recommend people to go out and read some books on different aspects of health. Some of them are going to be crazy. Like, some of them are going to be out of their minds

And I'm just surprised that they were able to get that smoke scent out of it because it's been there for years. But, yes, people smoke, and smoking does suppress your appetite. So, yeah, that's definitely a factor in why people were thinner. They were smoking, they weren't hungry, and so there's that

We have a huge section of coles dedicated to those comorbidities. But if you go to a place like Japan, that section of the code book might be just a few pages because they don't deal with that kind of stuff in Japan like we do in America. And so, yes, it's our diet. It's what we eat

And I don't know if this young lady had a health scare or something that drove her to change her perspective or maybe if the doctor warned her, hey, if you continue to gain weight or if you don't lose weight, this will happen, that will happen. I don't know. But she had a change of heart and she apologized for leading her people down this path of body positivity when she should have been using that platform to help people get healthier

I need to find ways to alleviate stress, and I need to do things to improve and take care of my health as I get older. So you're right about that. We don't think about that when we're young, because when we're young, we think we're going to be young forever. When you start getting older and you realize, no, that's not true, then you start looking at your health and taking it more seriously. So, yeah, I totally agree

And us not really having adult and very, very logical conversations about weight gain and balances and diets and all these things because for decades we've put so much focus on people's outward appearances and overall builds and body types obsessively to the point where eating disorders came along. And when you have, like especially for women, men are particularly different if you have an entire culture that's built around a woman being skinny and being small framed and larger breast and all these type of features

But because now it's such an easier way to indulge in bad habits, I think we're starting to see this changing of the guard where the uncommon idea of a person being overweight it's now becoming common and it's becoming accepted and it's being reclassified. The term BVW used to hear big, beautiful woman. Big, beautiful black woman. It's been completely restructured several times to fit the need of whoever is using it

I agree people are okay with gaining weight, and they believe just because their blood pressure is normal, that it's okay for me to be overweight. I can be overweight and healthy. But what about what that extra weight is doing to your body? Your skeleton is not designed to hold all of that. It's not supposed to hold that much weight. So regardless of what your blood pressure reading is saying, you're still carrying a lot of weight

But, yeah, I would rather people focus on just the inside and getting healthy instead of what the world want them to appear to be, because I've been fooled by appearances so much in my life that I just don't look at that anymore. I can't go by that anymore. Just focus on healthy eating if you can. I know it can be expensive. And focus on what's going on with your cardio, getting that heart right, getting that oxygen right
