Salman Rushdie stabbed at an event; what is the underlying message?

And I have to say that a writer's freedom to express themselves on any topic is sacrosanct. And I think the message that this attack is sending out is that if you have a controversial opinion on a topic, you better watch out because your life is probably a danger and you never know when and how these attacks can happen. So it's quite chilling to see this happen to someone with Rushdie's stature, and if it can happen to him, it can happen to a load of other people

We gather to witness - even this

And most people who are following through calling or mentality can't indulge in the arts in general, because what are the arts? The arts are just an invitation to get outside yourself. To ultimately get back into yourself deeper through the journey of something as sublime as words that are put in a certain order
