Controlling and Banning Doesn’t Help

And I'm not one to retaliate or get aggressive online, so it's more about education from my side. And when this article popped up in my feed today by Anne, it just really made me think even further about this controlling paradigm as she refers to it. And basically there was this whole the bills are being put in all these states and they're basically saying 18 and under should not have access and they're going to ban anyone under 18 from social media without that parental consent

Is there trust with their adult in their life? Do they talk to each other about it if something's wrong? Do they go to each other and do they get help or seek advice and so forth? It's that conversation, right? So anyway, I put the link to this article in the first five minutes post, and I would love to hear your feedback on how you think about what's happening right now

But to have something that's a ritual ritualize the conversation, say, okay, on Sunday nights we're going to talk about this and make it almost a democratic moment where adults are in the room, even if one of them is a 13 year old or a 17 year old. But it's that theme. It's just the theme of good communication and continuity and closeness and creating space that's safe, where everyone can express who they are in the moment

And it may not be perfect and there's still struggles, but why take the risk of having your child block you out, tune you out and go through that pain versus making this something that is an enjoyable conversation? Last night, my daughter found a filter in one of her social media apps and it was an AI app, and it takes a scan of your room that you're sitting in, and then it redecorates for you
