Ethics Epi04: Samaritan Law

Picture this. You're enjoying your time at the beach when you notice someone drowning and you, not wanting to mess up your sunscreen that you just applied, decide not to help. That person dies from drowning, and the family decides to sue you for not helping. Is it right or wrong for them to sue you, and is it right or wrong for you not to help someone in a crisis?

Let's say, if someone's drowning or I see someone clearly unable to breathe or having a heart attack or some sort of medical emergency, I'd call 911 or try to do something or the best that I can. But when it comes to any other situation where it's a gray area, I tend to just stay away and mind my own business. And the reason for that is, these days, you never know, as you said, what the outcome will be

Hell, even officers of the law who are instructed and upheld by laws that give them this power to help can make a situation a whole lot worse. So I guess the best you can do is what you can do. And sometimes it's knowing that it's out of your hands or you're powerless to help. We're often in the age now where a lot of people criticize one of pulling out their smartphones and recording events
