Unclaimed: A lesson about family, death, and being prepared

article image placeholderUploaded by @FarikaB_Redux
And I'm not rich by any means at all, but because I know I would rather go broke than to let my brother go unclaimed, I did what I had to do to make sure he had a send off. It wasn't elaborate. It was an immediate burial. I found options that brought my cost down, but I at least made sure that my brother wasn't sitting in the morgue unclaimed

But I don't know. I'm a love precedes all kind of a person and I feel that if love is really truly how you felt about a person, it's no longer an obligation or I guess it's not an obligation to the degree of feeling forced. It's an honor to help someone leave this planet. It is an honor to be capable and able. And I guess I'm also a person that believes that your blessings come as you do

It's tangential to this, but it's about death, and that's what we're talking about, truly. But thank you so much for your your share here. It's it's just phenomenal to listen to this and know that, you know, there's not much we could do but our own individual lives and have the right paperwork in place, for sure. Thanks

That like you said, the friends, non blood family are stripped of the opportunity to love their people, their friends, all the way to the end, and all because there's no blood involved, whereas but the care is involved and the love and even the finances, if it comes down to it, is involved. But there's this strict line of what is considered family and who is considered able to do it and it just seems like it shouldn't be even in 2023

So I'm really curious now that you've just been on the front lines of this, do you know of any policies, I guess is it regional, is it local or is it a federal issue when it comes to being able to have rights to somebody's health situation or were the last rights for their bodies? I don't know. Anyway, I'm going to link Michael's reply. I was just going to do it and then I heard you ending it with that

I am unfortunately, have had enough life experiences that navigating the court systems because I manage my mom in regards to being a caregiver, I'm also her guardian. So I've had to learn how to, quote, unquote, read law because I can't afford a lawyer for these situations that I've been kind of thrown into. So I had to learn about these different things as I just pushed through the weeds and the morass of law because it's a lot out there

Whatever became of his body, if the state or whatever actually cremated him and buried him, like in a potter's grave type of situation for the unclaimed, that's so very sad. As a care provider for many, many years, I've had the privilege of caring for many clients of mine as well as caring for family members

But needless to say yeah, it's really sad that he had to go through this because of a lack of preparation, I guess you could say, or just not having enough preparation. Whereas if he had just a few more things in place this wouldn't have been as difficult. He is at least at a funeral home. We had told them that it will probably be best to just cremate him monetarily wise, but it's like they don't listen basically
