#TalkTo a Tech Recruiter

article image placeholderUploaded by @DBPardes
Welcome Elana Tabachnikoff, who is a veteran 30 plus years. She knows this space really well, and I just have a few questions. And then once I'm done and she's answered them, please join in and ask her any questions you might have. And I'm sure she'll do her best to help us out and understand how to be in the world of tech, how to apply for the right jobs, and how to present yourself in a really cool way. So here we go

Welcome Elana Tabachnikoff @elanat

1. Getting into it

First question is because I'm fascinated by the actual work you do. How did you get into being a recruiter? What was that journey like for you? And what advice would you give to people who want to be in recruitment these days?

@DBPardes

I guess that's all I have in terms of advice. I guess for people who are considering getting into recruiting or It recruiting, the first thing I would suggest is know the market, educate yourself, read, get as much information as you possibly can, so that even though you're not maybe a technical person, you understand the jargon and you understand the working pardes because it is very complicated. Um, and put yourself out there. Go to the places that interest you

2. Trends

I've got to ask you about trends. What are you seeing now and how does it compare to what you've seen in terms of the tech space and how people are applying for work, how they're preparing themselves for this industry? I know you're seeing trends because it's a crazy time, so just give us your bird's eye view because it's moving so fast. I think a lot of us, our heads are spinning

So again, I guess going back to the first question, it's educate yourself, know where we're heading, and make sure that you're on the cusp of the next cutting edge technology. And I guess today it would be AI. But in terms of trends, you're just consistently reinventing yourself and you're consistently learning to stay articulate and to be finding the right talent as a recruiter, that's the most important thing

3. Pet Peeves

Hello. Third question about pet peeves. What are you seeing? What have you seen in your career that really lights you on fire? Like, people should just not do this when they're applying for jobs. And I'm sure it crosses across industry and time, but just riff on that because that would be really interesting to hear. And thank you so much

@DBPardes

You pet peeves. Okay, so off the top of my head, I've done thousands and thousands of interviews, and I'm I'm trying to figure out, you know, how people really poke themselves in the eye. First, let me just suggest, if you don't have an elevator pitch for yourself, work on that within 30 seconds. You should be able to really be compelling, and especially talking to a recruiter or at any kind of interview, and sell your strengths

Alana, thank you for these quick replies. And I know it's a really interesting world right now for people who are looking for work in this space. So let's see if we get more questions. But in the meantime, I just want to thank you for spending time

Hi, elana. I'd like to ask a question about elevator pitches. I'd like to say more about that. Do you think of elevator pitches as saying, like, this is why I am so awesome? Or is it elevator pitch? More about this is how I can help you? Or would you say you said something about it being 30 seconds? So is it a combination of those things? Or is it about this is my unique experience?

@Dance

No. Hi there. Sorry for the late response. Imagine you have 35 seconds in an elevator with someone. And yes, you do want to talk about you and why you are awesome, but you also want to talk about, if it's an interview situation, why you're the right fit for the role. It's not too much cheerleading, but I think a little raw is appropriate. And keep it concise
