#AskSwell | How can we STOP Censorship of textbooks by conservative school boards? LOOK AT TEXAS to see the future if we don’t

article image placeholderTexas rejects science textbooks for explaining climate change
And this is a concern I want to take a deep breath with all of you and really talk about what we can do as citizens, what boards we can join, what school boards we can join if we if we are really that passionate about this. I am. When you have a conservative school board that really wants to censor what books go into the classrooms, it's the antithesis of education

To me, it's almost like punishment or abuse, really. And I'm a person who really I love books. I love to read. I love how it's imaginative, and you can use your imagination. But also, you learn so much from reading fiction, nonfiction, self help, and especially textbooks. I have some textbooks from college that I've kept that it's a great resource

Hi Deborah, thank you so much for posting this. This has been an interesting time, honestly, for a year to be working in education. Frankly, this doesn't come as a tremendous surprise. Education has just been politicized and it's really been under attack for such while and Texas is truly no exception. In fact, it seems to be leading the way in

But to understand the people behind them and how their minds work, that would be a great first step in having some dialogue that perhaps can shed light on the current trends and maybe impact future trends. So I'm going to look into that. If anybody has any ideas of people who might be sitting on these boards, that would be really wonderful. Thanks

But when it comes to judges and to school boards and other smaller and I do the air quotes, offices like that, they're just names, we don't know anything about them. And so we either guess or we don't vote, or we come up with some kind of silly system. Like I've on more than one occasion just voted for the ladies to be judges, thinking that ladies are more often compassionate. And of course, that's just foolishness on my part

We all do. And some of us ignore it, and especially if we don't have kids in the system. But we get to vote still, and we get to make an impact on these decisions that ripple out and create a macro culture, which is what I'm so afraid of. I share your sentiment, and I'm so grateful that you participate in the system and have the tenacity to do that

Hey. Good morning, Deborah. The information that you just gave and I'm going to read the article. I'll be honest with you, I didn't read the article. I'm actually taking a walk outside now as I'm recording this, but I listened to yours well cast, and it is truly distressing to hear what's going on with school board, but it's a reality
