A Fake Photo Wins a Real Prize : a stunt to prove a point?

article image placeholderPhotographer admits prize-winning image was AI-generated
I just read this article, and I wanted to share it and see what you thought. A German artist, Boris L. Duggsin won a prize. Sony World Photography award. Prize. And then he admitted, you know what? This is kind of an AI image. I didn't do it. And he did it for a reason. He wanted to see if he could win. And in fact, he did. And he said, wow

We have certain technologies that catch up past the point of what we may comprehend even now, and in some ways, we're not even really sure how to apply it. And I think what this gentleman did with this contest really puts that into question, and it really puts that back in a way to where not just because he did it in a shady way, but I think it makes a lot of people uncomfortable, at least in that type of world

I think that as a culture we're just going to have to be very careful, especially those who are being paid to look at photographs and determine not only the quality of the photograph but whether or not it really is a genuine photograph. Tough to do. And I realize that for the most part, you just know when you look at a photograph whether or not it's legitimate and whether or not it's taken by someone who knows what they're doing

Hey. I love the phrase AI imagery. I just think you just hit something on the nail for me, like reframing things on the outset, and then we have a whole different context because it is imagery and it's just created from a different source. But your points are really great. It's such a provocative topic. We we're all squirming a little bit, but it's very exciting too. All those things. Thanks

Now, I think that they're going to start using different ways of watermarking, or some technology will come up. I think that it already exists. But I was just saying to the gentleman who spoke before that the framing of it as AI imagery is going to be very helpful, and that's going to have to be a full disclosure. Blah, blah, blah. Yeah, it's interesting times. Thank you both for answering this

Now it kind of redefines things in a way that not everybody wants to really think about or look at. And anytime we come into technology that can change things and make us kind of take pause with those changes, the concept of ethics and morals and if this will be applied morally or ethically, you know, somewhere down the line, or how it can be applied
