THE CLIMATE CHANGE CONFERENCE : COP28 | Hear from an expert in the field and let’s get into it

article image placeholderUploaded by @DBPardes
We're looking at how to make these goals inclusive so that they protect people, they embolden people, they bring the whole world together to look at a vision that will include saving this planet and making our lives beautiful again. Because right now, so many people are feeling this gorge of climate change, from really crazy climate patterns to the over resourcing of our land and the air is changing and it's a really scary time, especially for the kids that see their future and they get really nervous about it

Your background

That's a very profound relationship they have with you, because when you influence someone at a high level, whatever they decide trickles down into their community, their business, wherever they're making an impact. And to be a strategist alongside them, that's a really amazing relationship. So can you talk about how you build these partnerships and how you started out to get to where you are today just so people can get sort of a lay of the land? Thanks

That is an evidence of them living the change to be seen as a leader. Which then means that they are building trust for any food policy shifts that they forward. And it would be the same thing with transportation. You can talk all you want about transportation emissions but if you continue to fly all over the place and be carted around in huge black SUVs whenever you land for climate conferences, et cetera, no one's going to take you seriously

A good story

Just because I think it's so great when people know the tangible impact these kinds of relationships can have, that they might start with a single conversation and then ripple out and you see incredible change, whether it's supply chain or or a policy. So thanks for telling us one story that you're really proud of that can really help illuminate the power of your work

You? Great question, Deborah. Always. I actually have two and try to like, telly succinctly one is actually related to Cop 27. Last year I facilitated the opportunity for a Global Sustainability Director of a very well known tech company platform to get into behind the scenes civil Society conversations on the sector of interest. So one of my big topics is food sustainability

Goals for COP28

You can have a great amount of skepticism too, but I want to start with what you'd love to see happen in the best case scenario, and then you might want to back that up with what you think is really actually possible, given the limitations of people's mindsets right now. But start with helping us understand why people gather in the first place. There's obviously a really beautiful goal

@DBPardes #COP28 - why do these orgs, corporations, country leaders etc. meet? This is where Andrea expresses some skepticism.

Yeah. Why do people gather in the first place? Well, the idea really was about getting those officials, you know, those negotiators, those country specific experts and policymakers on their own, to really get them there together in the room together. Global South, Global North, developing countries, all the companies most challenged with climate change right now that we in, all the more developed countries are causing the most harm and they're having to deal with it

@DBPardes #COP28 #ClimateInfluence #Media #Storytelling . Wherein more "climate pledges" are not what this crisis needs.

What is really possible again, I'm sort of cynical by nature but just sort of having watched these basically since 2015 and what is really possible at the tail end, I feel like some of these fossil fuel companies will say oh we mean it this time. This time we really mean it. We're going to limit something or we're going to change something by 2030. I think that you'll see more of that

Open for questions/ ideas

So it's always nice to figure out how to find that balance where people can really drop in and be human together and really make changes and stand behind those changes. I'm excited to continue this conversation and many more about this issue of responsibility from leaders down to everybody who is supporting those leaders. Really. I feel like now is obviously the time when feet are to the fire and we've got to do things. So I'm looking forward to this expanding

I think there's a lot of editing pruning. Of who goes and kind of how this thing is run to get to kind of the smaller rooms and make sure that those kind of synergistic conversations can happen. I think what happens over time with any event I've seen this at business conferences, et cetera, is they're so fun and they're so popular and they get bigger and bigger and bigger and they try to provide more rooms and more panels and whatever, and that completely defeats the purpose

And I guess, in a way, that's really what influence is, is the ability to, in a very directed way, see something that others don't see, that they want to see, and bring it up into our awareness. It's just so beautiful to watch this

And thank you for noticing that it can really change the lives and kind of the power and the impact of a lot of leaders. I've seen that with my clients. It's been really interesting

For the human condition to say in adulthood with years to decades of habit, of pattern of the intuition really that comes from the pattern of doing things the same way and getting predictable results. The ones who break through are willing to hear that feedback and say oh, I do have spinach in my teeth. Thank you. Let's try this another way

And what does it look like with climate influence coming from community and going up to people with power and leaders. But it starts with conversation and the sharing of what's possible

Bring the light

Like you said, the corporations are only making choices that we can do. I can't beat myself up about choosing paper or plastic. One or the other is less bad. But these two truths for me are, if you can imagine holding your hands out in front of you, the left one, this is dark, but we won't stay there for long. That this is inevitable, that we all die a terrible, fiery death because of climate change. I hold that to be true
