Know and Kill your Darlings

article image placeholderUploaded by @Binati_Sheth
Today on Writing and beyond. Let's kill Darcells or Kyd. Open it up to kill your darlings. I like to call this know your darlings. Because to kill the darlings, you have to know that the darling exists in the first place for you to load your guns, aim and shoot. Kill your darlings is a common cliched advice that experienced authors will give you. And I know you want to roll your eyes at me right now

In most of these situations, you have we repeat ourselves a lot, so we have to look at what we repeat ourselves in in all mediums. So it's a fascinating conversation. I'm really happy that you brought it up

It's a little more difficult, I think, when you're doing it on the fly, especially if you're trying to be succinct and keep things on track. But there's still a similar sort of notion going on there, because it's not simply about the ideas in your head and what you're trying to communicate, it's about being understood and the other person understanding what you're trying to communicate. And while certain pieces make sense to me, certain connections make sense to me

It wouldn't really matter if you don't contextualize it. There's a book, I don't recall its name. It begins with, like, very, I would say purple prosesh commentarian. Christina purple prose is what you were referring to, by the way, when you use a lot of words to basically say nothing and we don't do it deliberately. I mean, authors do, I think, do it deliberately to sound fancy

It's like my public storage where there's maybe no place else to use it or whatever. Or I like the phrase, like, the way that it sounds or, like, what it communicates or whatever. And even sometimes it's not an image. Sometimes it's me blathering on about something in a video. But anyway, I think that there are definitely podcasts that do that kind of editing, but I don't know how many of them do the long format
