If the caterpillar is found in a place where children play, like a park or playground, it's best to get a stick and have it handy and remove that little caterpillar from the area. The diet of the caterpillar is mainly maple and box elder leaves, but it does feed on other types of tree leaves as well, too. During the day, the caterpillar usually rests. It's usually tucked away somewhere in a shelter taking a nap, which is not a bad idea
