Hey, y'all, and welcome to another edition of at the Miss Leanne. Hope everyone's week is going well. Mine's going okay. I actually had a really interesting conversation with a colleague of mine, a fellow special education teacher, yesterday at a different school site than well, actually, I work for a county, but it was at a school site that I tend to go to to service some of my visually impaired kids

And it's not to say that there aren't things that are debilitating about it, but I think that too often these things are seen as other and pathologized instead of coming alongside and trying to understand how this person is different and then working with their strengths and with their challenges, no matter who they are, audhd or not. Autistic or not. My heart breaks for anybody who either gets misdiagnosed, not diagnosed or misses something like this

You. Wow, I am so blown away by your response to this. Thank you for your firsthand experience and knowledge. And I agree with you 5000%. It's always really important to me as a special ed teacher to see the student, not their diagnosis. And man, for it literally drives me nuts because on the one hand, and I agree with you about the DSM too, the diagnostic statistic manual

It takes its messaging from the stereotypes that are put into the official DSM and other books around the globe. And really, in some ways, that's the way it should be. But again, when it's broken and flawed, then we're perpetuating those broken and flawed messages, and it's really hard to learn about how you're individually wired and not internalize that ableism

And for me, the best part of my day, because like anything else, there is good and bad. And in teaching, there's a lot of behind the scenes politics. And for me, the best part of my day is just being with the students and being there, period. I mean, my goodness, we could be walking around picking up twigs or whatever. Seriously
