Should Life Skills/ Home Economics Classes be brought back ?

article image placeholderUploaded by @TheMs.Leanne
I am in awe of the one to one education they get and I thought about it and I said, yeah actually she's right because that is a lot of what I do with my special needs kids to ensure they have these skills to live a very successful life on their own. So as we were talking we also came to the conclusion that these are things that need to be brought back into the general education curriculum. Now I don't know why it stopped being taught

@TheMs.LeanneWoW. A really important one Leanne. One I feel has multiple important lessons that should still be taught.

I have most certainly had to do that these past few years, even very recently this year, for events that I've attended and even things that I've bought over the past few years, I've had to be conscious of, even just the value of money or the skill of the value of money and kind of remembering that that's something else that should be taught to today's young people

I think it's just a culture that has changed to more convenience based living where you have people that use grubhub, you have people who use DoorDash and postmates and all these other different ways of eating and essentially just getting food. So many of us can cook, especially when you have the culture of YouTube and all these different other digital platforms that will allow you to learn. I think the abilities are there

I am just trying to think of how this fits into the whole school ecosystem. Nowadays at the school I teach, we start at 720 or so in the morning and end at about 330. And it feels like the schedule is already packed back to back and they're asking teachers to do more. Like SEL is a part of part of our stuff now. And in some cases they took some things away

But I ran on a platform, if you will, of expanding the trade school element and the home economic element of schools. Basically just what you're talking about. Well, I came in twelveTH out of 13. So really, that message probably didn't resonate with the voters as much as I would have hoped. But I also think that perhaps my grandfatherly look didn't resonate either. So who knows? But yeah, I think we need to educate the whole child, not just one aspect

It was really cool and it was really interesting, and it definitely lent a lot to this conversation. So I thank you very much. Hope everything is well with you. Bye

And again, you are so pressured as a teacher, right. There are certain things you have to teach. And, yes, Americans were not as competitive as others in terms of education and in terms of getting into colleges in that respect. And that's why I brought it up, because it is a challenge and it is a balance, right?

It. I really, really enjoyed your reply. Very true. It's really interesting to me because people learn different ways and we each have different skill sets. Some of us will be college bound, some will not. I think trade schools are phenomenal. I got really disheartened years ago when people would put them down and say such horrible things. And I'm like, Why?

They couldn't do all this stuff. And I sat there laughing because I'm like, you know, I made it a teachable moment. I said, you know, we went into budgeting money. We went into how to pay for things not online, how to look up a recipe not online, how to do things without the use of the Internet. And I made it about a week long lesson

But I do want to point out we also need to know how to do things old school, right? Like checks, checkbook. Okay, maybe not a checkbook per se, right, but just the concept of it. We do need to understand in terms of how to budget and what if. You can't get your stuff online and what if okay
