Ask the Special Education Teacher

It was just a horrible situation every which way around. Okay, I have a few more here. Let's see. Three. What's something you wish you would have known early on when teaching special education? You know, not to be intimidated by others and their methodologies of teaching, because we are all good people. We all have something to bring. We all have different approaches to teach our children, but it doesn't mean they're wrong, and it doesn't make us any less than

Hi! 😃

Miss Leanne, I have a question for you regarding your work and your personal, more so, your personal experience. You said in the beginning of this that it was caught and you were able to receive some form of treatment or care for your mental health condition or your not mental Alphabet. You're a learning disability, or however you describe it. I'm sorry, you could correct me in your response as a parent

Right. Like, I couldn't tie my shoes. And there are times when I'm tired. Honestly, my hand to eye coordination sucks and I will drop things. I can't cut in a straight line things of that nature. But it all goes under the umbrella of specific learning disability. Yeah, I love being an educator, but man, all the steps and all the crap us as teachers and students have to go through, it's insane. But it is what it is

All right, Miss Leanne, I'm back with an additional question. How do you feel about the show love on the spectrum? I never worked on that show, but as someone that is repulsed by reality television, it is a well made and it is a powerful show. And it's a good show. It's a good show that it, at certain points, the original, like, I think, is BBC. Of course it's exploitive

And in order for me to serve my community, and in order for me to serve my community and also provide access to whatever it is I'm offering, whatever that might be, I need to understand mobility, access issues, developmental issues, especially in the youth, as I speak to the parents

You. Thank you so much. I really appreciate what you had to say. First and foremost, whenever you're talking to anyone, is just treat them as people, you know? And you can like for me, right. I have a lot of training, and I understand things from the educational and somewhat medical background as well because I need to understand both. But even then, how things affect a person, it's very individualized, right?

How much of your teaching has to be customized individually

And it just seems to me like a teacher usually will have a lesson plan. Everybody follows the lesson plan. Those that fall behind need to get additional tutoring or what have you. But with special education, it just seems like it needs to be adjusted and would probably much more need to be individualized. Is that the case? And do you see AI helping in that realm in the future?

So there's that. And then you have the moderate to severe populations, which is what I've been teaching and dealing with, which is more medically fragile, and the really severe autism cases, my blind and visually impaired students, deaf and hard of hearing, things of that nature. So there's that aspect. Now, in terms of lesson plans, you're right, they are highly individualized, especially in my case

I'm after hearing your podcast, I was able to relate to you since I worked ten years as a paraprofessional in special education. And I agree with you. I myself, when I was in school, I have some challenges. I was very distracted. I have issues. And as I grow up, I felt like I wanted to help out those kids that have gone through similar situations that I have

They will talk about them behind their backs. That's actually happening to me right now. And yeah there's a lot of inner office politics and a lot of really horrible spade be things going on that adults are responsible for not children. So yeah on many levels the adults tend to be more of an issue than the children. Totally agree with you. Thank you so much for your comments. I really, really appreciate it. Hope you're having a good day. Bye
