In the land before Wifi, buttons were way more powerful than they are now, especially if it had a pause or stop button and a record button built in to the device. Regardless of hardware, it was always capable of doing something and editing something in its most basic capacities. The lambda for Wi Fi people could at least still record things and hear it back and then record over it, or something called overdub, eight tracks, things like that
