#antebellumfilmschool: Ep. 12 - The Need for the Black Film List

article image placeholderUploaded by @The79thstreetkd
Because film has influenced us in a certain way. Where we begin to reason with people differently versus condemning them for awful things, like many of our crimes, where the Black Panthers are just a terrorist organization. There are only really two films, maybe three. There's an older 30, maybe 30 to 40 minutes documentary done in the 1970s about the Black Panther party. I think criterion captured this in one of their collections

#weeklyswell - With lists like AFI creating film lists for all time classics, what is the need for a Black Film List? What is the importance?

Why is that a gangster movie? Because if you look at that in comparison to other movies, like boys in the hood, men's society, as you mentioned before, those are gang are. Even though there are coming of age movies, but they're more gang culture type movies based on south central la type of thing. But in new Jack City, it was organized crime

It's outstanding when we see these avenues that are given when it comes to media and how one is perpetrated as worse than the other, getting back into the movie, because it ties all together. When you think about the way crime is portrayed, and you look at movies like Goodfellows and you look at casino, these are movies about the italian mob and the influence that they've had on the american economy
