Millennials, Gen Z & the end of the Adult Romantic Comedy?

article image placeholderUploaded by @The79thstreetkd
The adult romantic comedy, if I had to put it in lamest term, to give you an example of it, usually a star driven narrative that is centered around relationship quarrel, whether that be pullings II love, whether that be getting a divorce, whether that be breaking up, whether it be friends finding out they have films for each other, whatever it may be

#askswell - Certain genres in film disappear with the times, but the absence of the Adult Romantic Comedy is an interesting void, specifically "now."

Part II

But when it comes to the genre itself for adult romantic comedy, I think a great deal of it is the adjustment of maturity. It's an alteration in how we perceive relationships, love, and how we talk about these things. And these have never been easy topics, but you have to address the monkey in the room. If these movies are being made for adults, they will be being made for Gen X that is still alive

And people sat and watched these movies, and they watched Julia Roberts starring them and lead them down this two hour runtime, or Meg Ryan or Billy Crystal or Tom Hanks or whoever the person would be in these stories. There have been so many, I forgot. There was one with Marissa Tome and Robert Downey Jr. It just seemed as if people were willing at one point to shut their brain off and not take anything as personal, or just sitting and be entertained by the quarrels of relationships

Outright hateful movies is a different discussion than characters that are flawed, that say problematic things because we, as adults aren't perfect. It's a very particular topic and I'd love to hear what everyone's thoughts is about this. Where do you guys feel we lost the ability to tell the adult romantic comedy trade? Do you think it'll ever come back in a world where we just oversaturated with streaming services so the good ones will probably get lost amongst the shuffle?

So I'm a huge fan of nostalgia, of old movies because of the times, and you see how it evolved and how it played a role in some of the popular culture of things that we are in today. But as far as the end of it, yes, I'm tired of the reboots. I feel the reboots. I think some of them are just a money grab. I really do. I think it's a money grab now

Those films don't exist anymore. I don't know if it's because of the Ala Carte mindset that we now have where everything has to be tailor made for us. We're a much more spoiled society than we used to be. So the idea that we make movies now that more so fit the category of let's fulfill a slot that needs to be filled rather than an actual project that needs to be put out is what's overwhelming society
