Do the "Darling movies" of the Oscars hold up over time?

article image placeholderUploaded by @MrBingo
And this movie, for a lot of people, especially when it came out, it was a big deal, and it didn't really do great at the box office. It got a little bump here and there, but it wasn't a smash and it wasn't made for a lot. It was made for a very small amount of money. And it's a movie that took me a little bit to get through. It deals with war, combat, all that stuff

You know what I mean? There's so many different factors to consider. And so then I'm wondering, how much does winning Best of et cetera mean in the grand scheme of things? And so, I don't know. I suppose it's part of the golden era and glamor and seeing actors and winning awards, and there's some sort of nostalgia and, I don't know, warm, fuzzy feelings about it that people can have

Most academy winners don’t hold up over time

Avatar may or may not. They'll probably win special effects award. I feel like they might have won something else as well in Theo special effects arena, because it just obviously at that point it's made so much money, it's like, well, we kind of have to acknowledge it at some point for at least something. But they do overlook a lot of movies that should receive reward an award or do deserve some recognition for movies that no, they don't hold up

Academy nominees

So obviously it's going to be the one that wins. Maybe it's a good movies TV, don't know. I haven't seen it, but I haven't heard anything good about it so I don't know

Also Theo Fablemans, I've heard very good things about it's. Spielberg, I mean it's sort of I feel a given to some extent with him. And then also Tar and the Banshees of Insurance. My younger brother actually told me that Tar was his favorite movies TV the year and on letterbox he gave it a five out of five. So I haven't seen it yet. It's definitely on my to do list

@Taylor this speaks to lack of advertising

I guess it's probably because of Netflix and some of these streaming services that can just pump out garbage movies over and over and over again, that to get me into a theater takes a lot. I've seen two movies since the dark times, top Gun and Avatar. So for them to get me into a theater, it takes a lot. And so, like, everything everywhere all at once. If I would have seen it on a streaming service, I probably would have watched it

And so if I was like a producer and I was trying to quantify success for this film, I think that I would almost consider the nominations to be, like, the most success that could come from this film because I can't imagine that it's made a billion dollars or $100 million. Actually, let me look it up while I'm talking to you. $20 million box office. So if they're spending money on advertising, they might see that as like a potential waste of money

@MrBingo When did darling movies start?

And I'm seeing movies and I did a swell about the greatest decade of the 70s. When I look at those best pictures, I don't see any darling movies and I see movies that have stood the test of time. And that goes doubly for when you look at what films were nominated. It was just a fantastic decade

@Phil

Everybody was trying to make the next Star Wars and everybody was trying to make the next Blade Runner is another one that comes to mind as far as movies that truly excelled in a way that changed filmmaking. And in doing so, they influenced other filmmakers to the degree where and of course, we know Hollywood loves short things, but seventy s and eighty s, what a great time for film
