On the college level, as far back as 1899, a conference sponsored by Atlanta University recommended that blacks participate more in business and that colleges offer courses that would prepare them for business activities. However, until Fish University offered applied economic studies in 1917, black colleges and universities concentrated on classical and theological curriculum to prepare graduates for occupations most open to them.
