Wrestling with sexual harassment

article image placeholderUploaded by @RSFoundation20
And that is that it has taken our society long years to make sports an acceptable area for girls to be in. And a lot of these girls who are in sports now, whether it is as a runner or it's as a wrestler or a shooter or whatever that or a gymnast, a lot of them come from not particularly privileged backgrounds. And for them and their families to allow them to be in this space has taken many, many, many years of social empowerment

I think instead of making it consolidate in the hands of individuals, you have to come up with something else. I don't know what that something else could be because honestly, there has been so much that has been tried and every single time some dipshit finds a way to overcome that barrier and do an assault, because, of course, they do like the Jurassic Park. Meme goes, life finds a way. I think, sadlyingly, assault finds a way

I just wanted to chime in here. So, Vandana, when you spoke about how some of the strongest women in India, physically strong, I mean, have been subject to harassment not just once or twice, but for several years, the irony actually hit hard

How many stopped their own family prejudices?

The abuses that happen within families, they are shoved under the carpet, they are not spoken about for shame, for fear of being ridiculed. Yet the victim suffers for years and years together. Right? When will this change? This kind of change begins at home. So before we go out there and protest on the streets and try to change the system, we need to change our families

And so I can only say, like I said in the previous well, that it has to begin with us at home and hopefully our legal system will go through some reforms to put these people into a faster accountability, and eventually, hopefully, we'll see fewer such outrageous cases in the future. I know I went on a very long, but I feel very strongly about these things, because these things keep happening, right, and we keep talking about it instead of doing something about it

That's still a huge question mark. How do we go about changing mindsets. Because regardless of how many laws you have in place, like Ian said, there are crores cases out there waiting to be heard. But unless you have a social movement where women take it upon themselves, right, and sort of start pushing for this change, nothing is going to happen
