The Holding Penalty: A discussion on officiating

article image placeholderUploaded by @Phil
Giving them a first down was a little bit extreme and people felt that it was anti climatic and we let the referees decide the game and not the players on the field. There seems to be an unwritten rule in playoff football, playoff sports in general, championship sports is that you let the little things go. In these big games, especially down the stretch, you let the nitpicky stuff go

#superbowl Should refs officiate differently at the end of games?

And I think with officiating, consistency is definitely key. But then it also has to be who's in charge of what within the game. And the reason why I say that is and this has really consistently come up in basketball, NFL has gotten super technical and you have 4 hours of a televised game that has 20 minutes of play time, technically

I mean, you almost have to be a philosophy major to understand exactly what a catch is these days in the NFL. And to your point, if you isolated a camera on every single lineman and checked after every play, whether that was holding or hands to the face on every single play, you're going to find multiple violations. How far down the road do you really want to go with this?
