49ers make critical error by taking the ball first in OT

Now this is what you would do in the regular season because if you score on your first drive, if you score a touchdown, then the game is over. So you have a decisive advantage in the regular season and you really need to take that ball first because you can end it

So in terms of the decision, I thought taking the ball first makes better sense from one angle, which is if after both the teams have taken one possession each and scored the same score, and I don't know how likely that is, but both of them hit a field goal or both of them hit a touchdown them, then the team which has the first possession does get one more shot at it

If you did think that it was going to be a defensive battle in the overtime period and that it was going to be very stingy defenses, then maybe you do start thinking about having that ball third and trying to walk off with a field goal. So I think a case could be made. I still believe that you want to go second in that situation every time

He put down the most important decision of the entire year to some numbers and some odds. Are you joking right now? It blows my mind how the analytics are taking over sports. And it's not just football, it's not just coaches that are obsessed over the analytics and coach with that and it goes everywhere. It's owners who say, look at the analytics, they tell their staff, look at the analytics

And I think it comes down to analytics needs to be a tool. One tool in your two bolt that you use. Zach, you'd be more of a fan of the game in the 70s baseball, especially, where managers would go on hunches. I thought he was due. I didn't think he could hit this batter, so I pinch hit for him. No analytics to speak of, just observation and just the gut and the feel of the game

I mean, it's already taking over, but eventually it will completely take over. And given your point about the punting, how analytics always say, go for it, go for it, go for it. Unfortunately, punting will probably be obsolete at some point if people keep looking at analytics. But I appreciate your response. I hope you have a great day. Thanks. Peace
