Reel Swell Ep. 11 - This Show Nearly Broke Me

article image placeholderUploaded by @overlythematic
For the first time in all of my swells, I will have notes that I will be referring to. Nothing that I'm going to read directly, of course, but there's a more in depth analysis that I have to get through so that I can move past what this show the impression the impression this show has left on me. So let's start with a brief summary of the story after the blip

Adaptation

And artistic liberties are when details, characters, events, plot, storyline are tweaked slightly or dramatically so that it can be consumed on the big screen. And throughout the history of film where we do have these adaptations, the number of artistic liberties is countless and the enjoyment of that film is either hindered or enhanced by those artistic liberties. Now, because movies are two to 3 hours long, it is almost necessary to condense those stories from that source material

Characters - Nick Fury

As we go into what details, adaptation, why it's important, what are some of the aspects of it? An argument could be made that Marvel's Secret Invasion wasn't necessarily an adaptation of the source material of the books. An argument could be made that this particular storyline was feeding more from the MCU as a whole, continuing the journey of the characters we've seen on the screen, specifically, and only so we could argue that the story that I feel wasn't developed

Characters - Maria Hill

Another character who I feel was done a disservice throughout this series. Well, actually, it was the first episode, and that was Maria Hill. She was unceremoniously killed in the first episode. And it isn't that her death meant anything. I think that's what bothers me about it. Maria Hill has been Nick Fury's second hand throughout this entire journey, and they bring her back just so she can be murdered by the bad guy

Characters - Talos

I'd like now to talk about Talos. We first met Talos back in Captain Marvel, where he, Nick Fury and Carol Danvers were on a mission to save the Skrulls from Kree persecution. And that movie ends with Nick Fury and Carol promising these Scrolls to find them at home, one that is out of reach of the Kree. Now, let's fast forward to present day after endgame, and everyone has been brought back by smart, hulk's, snap, what is referred to as the Blip

Characters - Gravik Pt. 1

So he infiltrated all of these world governments, made all of these decisions that would irritate these governments into conflict. And once that conflict erupted, he would have his home, his people would have their home. And we get that motivation and that plan. Over the course of two episodes

Characters - Gravik Pt. 2

That's not how you develop a character. He's evil for evil's sake, and he has this evil plan. But it didn't seem like there was more to it up to that point. And I would say it wasn't until episode five where they tried to flesh out who he is and how he became the graphic of right now. And it was even cheapened by the fact that that scene, those scenes weren't even directed at the reason he became who he is

Characters - Gyah

Throughout the show, she supplies information to Talos about what Gravic is doing and where he may or may not be trying to thwart some of his plans, to the point that Gravic actually finds out and needs to eradicate her from poisoning the rest of the faction. So he actually murders Gaia. It turns out, however, that Gaia turns herself into a super scroll, which is another part of Gravic's plan

The Invasion

The invasion, part of Gravic's plan was to infiltrate the world governments, take over the lives of several key people who held positions of power. At the end of the show, we find out that he's keeping all of these people. Well, it's not actually the end of the show

Themes

It was just an evil plan. In the last episode, as I mentioned, he gets his monologue, but it's too late. By then, the show is over. And you pulled a double fake by having him say all of this to Gaia disguised as Nick Fury. So he doesn't even get to deliver that message to the person who needs to hear it. The themes in this show were introduced, but they weren't developed enough, they weren't fleshed out enough

Conclusion

It's not that I'm tired of superheroes, that's not the case. But lately these movies and these series, they just haven't produced been produced at the same level of quality as the first ten years of the MCU. I was not impressed with the writing, the character development, the story, the plot. None of it jumped out at me as fresh. We weren't doing anything different, and in fact, it didn't seem like we were doing anything at all
