Does labeling children "gifted" or "challenged" affect their performance?

But they're more advanced in that they give the opportunity for kids that are deemed to be academically superior in some ways, the opportunity to be able to learn at the level they are without being, quote unquote, held back by those that are in normal classes. On the flip side of that, you had the learning disabled class. That's what we called it in the don't know what they call it today learning disabled special education classes class

We all have different ways to learn that. We learn there is nothing wrong with you. And I'm glad I was there to say that. And there were some times where during testing, I could bring them to one of the, oh, gosh, I think it's like a testing room because sometimes some of them couldn't concentrate while in the room full of a lot of students

Hey, Ms. Coles. I do believe that sometimes the label that the school gives kids who are gifted versus regular versus delayed does affect a child working in foster care. I actually see this quite a bit because a lot of children, when they come into the foster care system, they are delayed. That's the word that I use for it. So they are behind, and they're not behind by choice

She's a beautiful person, but I do wish sometimes that my parents hadn't labeled her as a genius, because, like I said, it put a lot on her, but it also put a lot on us as non geniuses, quote unquote, we're really smart. All of us are extremely brilliant. However, we weren't given that label, which means that in some aspect, we were looked down on by our father, who saw her as better than us

They had their own resources, but they also would integrate them in and outside of the classrooms. Kind of like in and out. But they also had time separate from the class to work at their own pace. And I think kids that coles have behavioral issues because they have such a huge effect on the class. Those can also be separated as well until they get because their issue is really meeting behavioral expectations, routines, standards on a regular basis

On the other side of that, I was one of those gifted students. Our program was called Tag, and it says for talented and gifted. For us, it started in middle school. So in the 6th grade we were identified as talented and gifted. And once a week we would take a bus and we would go to another middle school, but all the kids from the different middle schools would convene in this one class and we would do activities and things like that

But teachers do recognize that some of my kids in here have very unique sets of needs that require the training that I don't have and the time that she's not able to give, either. So thank you so much. This was great

It's like, okay, if I don't do well, maybe I can go back to the regular classes like everybody else, because I'm tired of them sticking to me in these classes where I've got to do, you know, more complicated assignments and more homework and all that stuff in order to keep up and in order to continue to grow in my learning. And so, yeah, I remember even in college, I was like that

Hey, SIS. Thank you for your response. Yes, the label of genius. Everybody expects you to have a really high IQ and to excel on your SATS and to be the valedictorian and to get into all of the top schools. And yes, that expectation is put on you. And it's hard to escape that expectation. It's hard to escape it

And I do believe that with some special needs kids, their goal is to get back into the classroom. But I'm happy to know that now, in modern classrooms, they're able to stay in the class with everybody else. And Kaye take an hour or two a week to go with their paraprofessional and work on whatever needs to be worked on, or the paraprofessional comes to the classroom and helps them work on it

So it was really cool. Very interesting. When I was a kid, I probably didn't appreciate it much because I didn't really care one way or another. I just knew I was in these special classes. I didn't really understand what it meant to my future or anything like that, but it was cool. It definitely got me around a different demographic of students and kids and help me to learn some things that I may not have learned in a regular classroom

And so my oldest daughter was very smart. She always got A's and all that kind of stuff. My son, I could see that he was struggling, and so I advocated for him, and eventually he did get they called it resource classes because he did have a learning disability. And then my youngest daughter, she was really smart. She just had some personal and emotional things that she was dealing with, and so she wasn't able to go to a regular school

But more children were labeled ADHD. More black children were labeled ADHD than white children because for a while, that was the go to thing. Now everybody is autistic. They're labeling everybody autistics now. Or a form of autism. Right. They're on the spectrum. Right. And so it's sad because that limits some. And then the ones who they claim, quote unquote, are gifted. They excel. Yes

And yeah, sometimes it's just kids that are having trouble learning in certain class environments. Like I said, nowadays it's a lot better because your child can develop an IEP or have an IEP developed for them. And now you have paraprofessionals that can come in and assist your child in the areas where they're struggling. Whereas back in our day, you didn't have that

My dad was very on his education, and my nephew was a straight A student throughout all the schools school I mean, throughout elementary, middle school, and high school, he was a straight A student. It wasn't like he even had to really study hard. He just had the smarts. And so my dad was like, I'm pulling my and at that time, it was my two nephews and my daughter going there
