#VoiceYourOpinion | Are You the "Default Parent"?

article image placeholderUploaded by @MsColes77
And then my dad took me home, left me there and went on back to work. So that's how that went down. But I think that the default parent is kind of the dynamic in a lot of families. You have that one parent that is usually like the gateway for everything. And so she's the parent that knows all the children's shoe sizes, pant sizes. She knows all their allergies. She knows their food sensitivities

Our son is 63, so that changes all the time. But, yeah, I think that there tends to always be a default parent. But my heart does go out to the women who work outside of the home and are the default parent because they essentially have two full time jobs. Or, like you mentioned, the single mamas who don't have the dads to help share that burden

And he was very good to them up until he passed away here about three years ago. So he was really a great person to kind of accommodate all of those needs that the children had, because I was kind of like the parent or the mother that would be helicoptering and explode at whatever they were doing wrong. And he was always the cool one to talk to them and tell them why and answer all their questions and give them a history lesson

You in my family, when I was growing up, my mom was more the default parent because my dad was intimidating. You know, he was the workaholic and not there always, and especially in our younger years. And I kind of saw him as someone who came home once in a while and changed all the rules. And, you know, all of a sudden, life was different. And then we could breathe a little easier when he went back to work or wherever it was he went

And so, yes, it's natural for mom to know all the things like their food sensitivities, their allergies, their likes and dislikes, their favorite colors, their favorite tv shows, their, their sizes, their diaper sizes, pan sizes, shirt sizes, all the things. It's like mom knows all of that because mom spends the most time. And I think for the most part, most moms don't mind that

And so I think it's great that you were just like, hey, my husband was the one that was kind of that person because of some of the things that I was doing. So that's great. And thank you so much for adding that, because I think when we think about the default parent, I think most of our minds go to the mom, because, like I said, for me, it was my mom

Hey, Tanya, thank you so much for your response, and I'm so sorry that you grew up with a dad that was intimidating and made you all feel uncomfortable in his presence. Yes. The default parent would be the mom because she's your safe place in a situation like that
