Freedom is the New Flex

article image placeholderUploaded by @MsColes77
I think we saw how our ancestors and family members kind of slaved at the job for 30, 40, 50 years, slaved at a job they didn't like just so that they could continue to maintain their standard of living. And so we've decided, well, let's change the standard of living

And to spend that amount of money on what we think of as a starter home or traditionally think of a starter home is absurd. It's absolutely absurd. You are really just beholding yourself to that home, and then you start questioning, hey, if I just spent 500,000 on this home, why am I even thinking about taking vacations? Shouldn't this be the place that I want to be?

If something breaks down in it, you got to fix it. You know what I'm saying? And so they just realized that this isn't where it's at. And especially, like, a lot of people like people who are think about empty nesters, right? Why am I still holding on to this three, four, five bedroom house? And all of my kids are grown and living on their own? Like, on the off chance that one of them want to come and stay tonight?

And I was like, this is what folks are doing. Oh, I'm not going to do it. No wonder why the dealership gave me that number like it was normal. Normal. That's not normal for me. And so, like, pandemic wise, I stopped wearing makeup in pandemic because I was home and then ill. The thought of getting makeup on my mask just grossed me out

And I absolutely adore all the things that I've done to my space because I'm the only one living there. I have my office at home, I have two bedrooms at home, I have a music room, I have space at home to do the things that I need to do. And that's what's most important. I'm not sitting here feeling like, oh gosh, I need three more bathrooms and three more bedrooms. For who?

@Phil

I'm sacrificing things that are probably taking up too much space in my life to begin with. I was spending out all this money to maintain all these different things that I don't really actually need. And I think that that's freeing in itself because a lot of the things we do sometimes are, like you said, to keep up with the Joneses, they've got it, so I got to get one too or they got it and I got to get something even bigger or better

And I think it's another reason why we're seeing such a big push towards work from home and remote positions is that people don't want to be bound to an office and a cubicle all day. They want to be able to get out and do things, explore, have fun. I want to be able to relocate without worrying about finding another job in a different state. I can just pick my job up and move. I don't have to worry about finding another job wherever I go

I got rid of all of the little houseware stuff, all the things that I don't use anymore. I got rid of it, and I felt like I had lost, like, 20 pounds just from decluttering this room. And I promised I would never let it get back like that ever again. It's a space, a usable space

You. Tanya, I hope you can hear me. I'm out here at an amusement park, but I had to pause your swell and reply, yeah, paying that much for a car note is ridiculous. But when you say that's more than your mortgage. Wait a minute now. Wait a minute now. I've been you. I need to leave Connecticut. Bin due. But you telling me that's more than your mortgage. Okay, I need to I need to move
