#AskSwell | When is the Right Time to Leave a Bad Review?

article image placeholderUploaded by @MsColes77
If I have a negative experience, I like to reach out to the business first, because I believe everybody should have the opportunity to make it right. Everybody should have the opportunity because nothing in life is perfect. There are going to be bad days in business. There are going to be bad days in life. And maybe this was just an isolated situation where there was a misunderstanding, some confusion, something that's going on, and everybody wants to make it right

Again, I'll look, especially if it's a new property or new to me, and I'll just kind of see what people are saying. I read some reviews, and I'm like, okay, that's a you problem, right? You spent $39 for a hotel. What did you expect? But I will glance at some of the reviews, kind of take a sampling. So I have an idea of what I'm talking about, of what I'm getting into

Hey, I love this conversation. I love how you phrase the question and then put supporting claims and then personal experiences to go with it all. I think it's all a case by case basis. It really depends on what the industry is if it's service, if it's a product. Am I dealing with lodging? Am I dealing with travel? How much was the product? Was there certain promises that were not met? If it was a service, was a service provider are late?

Hey, what's up? What's going on, Tanya? Okay, so here's my reply. Respectfully, Tanya, some people are just stupid. You know this people, unbelievable. Okay, so here's the thing. Now I have a few things to say. I wouldn't worry about things like that, Tanya, because you can have the most perfect business, and someone is going to find something negative to say. They're going to find something bad to say

I don't really pay attention to the occasional one or two reviews that said that they tried the product and it didn't work or they didn't like it, and they don't really give any context or information as to what they didn't like. I don't pay attention to those things, but I do pay attention to patterns. And all these people who don't know each other aren't going to come together. They're not going to collude just to take down a seller

Hey, Ty, thank you so much for your response. I love how you broke all of that out because it's really important to examine all of those different facets of an experience, a service, a product. All of those things are important. And one question that you highlighted that I thought was really important was, did the company do what they promised to do? And I see that a lot of reviews

And they're trying to make it so that the employee or the business owner loses their cool so that the customer can get online and talk about how they were treated when they provoke the whole thing by coming in with a bad attitude. But they don't want to talk about that. They want everybody to think they're the victim. And this business owner just went crazy for no reason. People are just really dirty nowadays. They are just so shady nowadays

Every time it got worse and worse and worse. And the final time that we went there, we were sat next to people that literally almost set the building on fire. This is one of those places where you can cook in front of you. It's like a Korean barbecue style restaurant. Literally almost set the place on fire. It took several employees and many, many minutes going by for anything to be actively done about it. We were also sat down at our table

Hey, Taylor, thank you so much for your response, your very honest response. One of the points you highlighted and I do agree with is how is the difference between how you make your complaints to a familyowned momandpop type of business versus a corporate giant like Walmart or Target. You had mentioned that with larger retailers or larger businesses, you take extra care to write a very detailed and colorful review of the service that you did or didn't receive or whatever the incident was

Always try to look at the silver lining. I don't go into anything hoping to give people poor reviews. I'm always of the mindset, as I'm reading a book, to give it five stars. Now, there are some books that I've given three stars, but I gave helpful critique, not a toxic criticism. That's the difference. Like one book that I want to finish, I just can't

Now they get to number eleven and this person is complaining about your product, your service, your quality, your delivery times or whatever. Excuse me, they're complaining about all that. And you may have five more reviews after that where everybody is completely satisfied. But that one review is going to give people pause. And I mean, reviews are valid. I know that I take reviews into consideration before buying a product

And then I think another hour went by. We saw other people getting served, and we weren't. And the person who kept walking by us, the waitress, she had this very nasty look on her face. She would turn around, look at us, and then look away. And when we would try to ask a question about how long is the food going to be, she would get upset
