The Suck it Up Buttercup Phenomenon (episode 12)

article image placeholderUploaded by @MotivateMeU
But for the most part, many people do need college to have that feather in their cap and that advantage later on. Okay? However, if the expectation is to graduate college and suddenly make a six figure income and be a senior executive, keep dreaming. That's not reality. You got to work for it. Okay? So, anyway, motivate me with your thoughts on this topic

So people are taking on loans, and then when you get out of school, the loans at minimum. I think I read somewhere, like, people are paying anywhere between five to $700 a month out of their salary, so they can't just get any mediocre job. Yes, of course. And the rhetoric of wanting a six figure job right out of school, I don't think anybody wants that

Did you go to college because you were convinced that the 45 year plan is the only way you can make it in this world? Because if you went to college and you're wanting a job in the private sector, that right there shows me that you chose the 45 year plan. And if you don't know what the 45 year plan is, google it

You wouldn't have had an american flag waving constitution country that would have allowed it in the first place. So if they're willing to listen, if they have an open mind, not a closed mind, but an open mind, then we can teach them all kinds of things that may actually help them in the long run. Now, I'm not one to think that younger generations are just worthless. I'm smarter than enough to know that. I mean, come on

I agree with Bruno. Education itself is not work experience. Anybody who is a fairly intelligent person knows that. So you want work experience? Okay, then go out and work. Work experience is that comes from someone who hires you not because they're obligated, because they owe you. Someone who hires you because you meet the qualifications and they think that you can do the job, and you seem to be excited about doing it. So, okay, here's the job

I'm sure a lot of them value education, but they want to have that security and to be assured that the job that they're getting right can sustain their life. Which is why you have a lot of young kids now who are not raising their hands to become accountants and lawyers. They want to be content creator stars, get that dough rolling in without having to do too much. But, yeah, this was great. This was a great discussion. Thank you

Even when I was trying to go to university, I believe it was about, and it was a state school, it was definitely less than twenty k a year, I tell you that. And in some cases it was between two and $400 per semester. Or course I forgot what it was, but it was doable. It was doable

And while college still holds some value, I wouldn't push the current generation to go into college because they're seeing, for one, they're seeing the student loan debt that's associated with going to college with that education. A four year college education costs you upwards of $100,000 if you don't have scholarships and all this other stuff, if you don't work and pay your way through at the same time, it can be very costly

And this is just to live someplace plus pay your student loans. We haven't talked about food. We haven't talked about transportation. We haven't talked about health insurance. We haven't talked about all these other coles that come up

@MotivateMeU (I got a bit impassioned. No reflection on you, but instead on patterns of repeated human behaviours that ultimately do not serve us.)

There are so many differences, and there may not have been able to make the same statement in the past. Right. I'm just reflecting on some things this morning, read an article that was talking about how thousands of years ago you could use the same, literally same tools that your great great grandparent used because they were just passing them down. The technology did not advance that quickly. Right

Like, if there's only one job for every three people? Find everybody does what they're supposed to, they follow every rule that they've been told to follow, and then there's going to be two people for every job. Without a job, what are they do? Just disappear? Evaporate into the vapor, into the ether? I don't understand all right. It's got me riled up just even thinking about it, but again, good. Swell. Thank you

And it's so true, and we're not catching up, and we simply can't at this point because of how quickly we're advancing. Like, empathy one on one was something we understood. Empathy one to the masses, or masses to the one with respect to social media. We don't even know what that looks like or how to do that. And yet we're then pointing fingers and saying, you're not being empathetic. Right?

This is like where I have such a difficult time speaking and understanding what the motivation is. Is it that I've suffered? So you should suffer or. I don't care about your suffering. And if you don't care about anyone suffering, why even speak? It's just such a difficult thing to wrap your head around
@SeekingPlumb

@MK1981

There's things like social norms, expectations, how you quote unquote should live, shouldn't live, and then how we evaluate one another, elevate and demote these hierarchies and so on. As much as I don't like them, I don't think we can have everyone not ascribing to them or everyone being a free thinker, everyone challenging authority, because at that point, then there's not much cohesion and everyone's leading in different directions

I'm not talking about nationwide local scholarships that people just don't take advantage of, but it takes hard work to do that. Then there's also the nationwide clip program, where you can clip out of a lot of classes. There's also the nationwide Sophia program that a lot of people are not familiar with that you could take advantage of. And in essence, clip out of program and save yourself tons of money in college tuition. So there's so many ways really to pay for college

And then there are just as many young students who are doing the right thing and trying to do it the right way, okay? They want to get a degree, and they want to get the right work experience, and they have the right attitude. Okay? But you're absolutely right. There are certain people, and even adults, too, who are in the millennial phase. And I've also met people in our age bracket, too, who feel that the world coles them everything

And that's where colleges, I feel, fail miserably because they don't focus on the practical end of things. Okay. It's great to be able to expand your knowledge and your horizons through academia and learn theories and expand your horizons with various types of classes in the arts, in history and so forth. But at the end of the day, you got to get your return on investment too. And how do you do that? Exactly the way you did it. Okay

However, what older people have, which younger people don't, is they have an opportunity to go to college for free, 100% for free, because there are so many companies out there and government agencies that have college tuition reimbursement programs, even companies that you can work for on a part time level that will pay for your college. And if you don't take advantage of that, you're crazy. So where there's a will, there's a way

Okay. I do know. And I see the discrimination that still happens to this day, even though the media has jumped on the bandwagon as many people have with this fad. I believe. I believe it's a fad because I see so many older students coming to school later on because they realize that, guess what? I really need a degree to get by in life

I think I got like maybe 40 grand worth of some student loans here and there, because a room and board and stuff like that. Not everybody has $40,000. And even now, if it's like, the average cost is around $80,000, where are you supposed to get that work study? There's not enough work study in the world to reduce that cost

Where was it? Sweden. I know there's a couple of places that I'm thinking maybe Germany as well, where they allow their citizens to get a freer education and they don't allow homelessness. It's crazy. If you've ever been to Japan, that was another place. If you've ever been to Japan, there are no homeless people. Why is that? The world is unfair. Correct. But the government thought of themselves as they wanted to make sure that things were more fair
