Is College Even Worth It Anymore? (Episode 4)

And also, college serves as your initial ticket in life because it does open doors. Now, are there some folks without a degree that do succeed in life? Yes, of course. These are folks who have successful businesses or maybe landed a nice inheritance. But collectively, throughout society, this group of people represents a smaller percentage than compared to the rest of us. And there's far much more involved in life than just getting a degree

Part of me says yes, part of me says no, but I will say the younger generation will post-pone college, just like the other stages in life

And I think especially with rising tuition and inflation, lots of young people are going to be discouraged from enrolling right now and they might enroll at a later time in their life. So I do say part of it is still worth it, especially if you're like in the engineering or Stem or in the medical field. I think that's where it's really worth it, especially since they're high demand jobs. So it really is depending on what people really want in life

There's a lot of colleges out there who are really not giving any discount. I must say that the college that I work with, I'm happy to say that they are, compared to many other colleges, much more cost effective. And that's why, for instance, I teach in the criminal Justice DepartmeNt, and we've been just getting students left and right. I mean, every year, even during COVID we've been getting students left and right, and it hasn't stopped

Hey, Bruno. I think this is such a great topic for you to bring up to discuss. And I fully agree with the sentiment that you mentioned, how college is an investment in yourself. It's totally understandable why kids nowadays question whether or not college is a worthwhile investment. Because the ROI has definitely diminished over the years. But that degree isn't just an investment in your education or a career postgrad. It's also about the networking and connections that you make, like you mentioned

They don't have a degree and they don't use it. And I remember them when we were all thinking about college. They were talking about how they wanted to get out of the small town, how they wanted to go get the degree so that they can have money, and they ended up being in that small town and being the people that they didn't want to be. So I don't know, like I said, I'm torn in between it

The system will hold you back otherwise, despite anything that anybody or any employer is saying out there, the reality is, and I think we're on the same page with this, is that employers will discriminate, just like in age discrimination. They don't overtly come out and say it, obviously, right, for liability reasons, but they will hire someone who's younger and who they can get more years out of than someone who is older. It's unfortunate, but it's a reality

But then there are folks who may just have gotten a bachelor's degree in psychology or sociology or whatever, and they're just not using their degree to their fullest potential. The nice thing about a Bachelor of Arts degree is that you can use that anywhere. You can use that in business. You can use it in the field of psychology and criminal justice. It's versatile. But getting a degree in and of itself doesn't make you financially successful or however you define success

But today, with all the resources available online for people to get educated on YouTube channels and just a lot of resources for people to get know, it's not necessarily you have a college degree. And the point you were saying about, you have two people that you're interviewing for a position. One had a college degree and one had experience. I got to disagree with you on that. I would rather take the person with experience and mold them and tutor them and help them along the way

Okay, now, granted, not all opportunities are like that, but many are, particularly if the hiring manager has a college degree, let alone a master's degree. Okay, the human biases just come right into the picture. It's just inevitable. No matter what anybody says or no matter what any company says, as far as, hey, advertising, and we're not going to be requiring a college degree

He doesn't exactly know precisely what he wants to study, but he has a general idea yet. That experience that he's stepping into is also very pinpointed and driven towards what he wants. My concern is when kids enter college, they don't have an idea at all, and then they just party and then they get out with a degree in something that basically guarantees that they will have to go and get more education if and when they decide that they know their direction

Later on, as they refine their skills and they really find out what they want to do, they end up getting a master's degree, which nowadays, actually the master's degree. And I'm just speaking from years of working in corporate America as well as what I've seen in government, because I retired from government as well
