His work showed children that exhibited a mild form of autism, which included symptoms such as a fascination with specific topics and above average intelligence. He referred to this condition as autistic psychopathy, but his work would lead to the introduction of Asperger's syndrome. Starting in the 1950s, awareness of autism was raised, but it was still seen and treated differently.
