And celebration was a part of the season. For many slaves, the holidays conjured up visions of freedom, even the opportunity to bring about that freedom. Being a slave, of course, was a burden. And what they endured and experienced was horrible. The prosperity and relaxed discipline associated with Christmas often enabled slaves to interact in ways that they couldn't do during the rest of the year
