Now, in extreme cases, they can cause damage to roads or building foundations or like I say, the street. The phenomenon isn't unique to the US or the Midwest because frostquakes have been reported in New England or Canada and even parts of Scandinavia. They can happen in rural or urban areas. They typically occur under a certain set of winter conditions after wet, rainy periods when there's little snow, which can have an insulating effect on the ground. And they're common?
