NYC Rent Increasing - What does this mean for young adults?

article image placeholderUploaded by @kkylaa
Hi, members of Swell. I wanted to hop on here today and talk about a topic that is quite prevalent and not really talked about amongst young adults that much, and that is simply the cost of living and just rent increases in itself. I currently reside in New York City, and I know rent is starting to get pretty high

It's not to say they're not in a populated area, but I have a friend that lives out in the quote unquote country in Texas, and the average rent there for a two bedroom is $1,900 and there's nothing around it. It's amazing how the rent increase just keeps going and going and going, even for condos, lofts and homes. But yet the pay wages have not. Cost of living continues to rise and nothing changes

Hey, Brandon, good to your voice. Glad to hear you found your place finally. That's good to hear. You got a house. It's awesome. Right across the board. But everywhere you go, you know, you mentioned all the different places in the States, the same up here in Canada, man. Like coast to coast, the prices are just going up. Even some of the places that were known to have more affordable housing are starting to increase now

Money was tight, people were behind on rent, getting rent relief. There was Eviction moratoriums for almost a year, all kinds of stuff. These leasing companies and landlords and this car over here sounds like it's about to explode. Not mine, but somebody else's. These landlords got greedy. And when things started to get back to normal, as I throw my air quotes up, they raised rent, demanded the back rent, hit with penalty fees

But if someone's in there, they can only do it by 2.5%, at least in this province anyway. So again, I digress. It's crazy. I honestly don't know how anybody could realistically pay that kind of mortgage, rent, whatever it may be, whether you're owning or renting, it's just out of control. Especially a place like New York. Even before all this, New York was always out of control. Like crazy expensive

They want you to constantly be in debt. They want you sorry about the beeping, guys. They want you to constantly be in debt. They want you to not have anything and just be struggling and chasing the mouth, being the rat race. That's not even fair to say. Chase the mouse. That was a dumb analogy to sit there and not even an analogy, actually to sit there and be in the hamster wheel over and over again. Because that's how they make money

So if you could control all three of those facets, then you basically have control of the people that need them, especially if you take most of their money and they can't even save anything and nothing's paid off, there's no savings and nothing's paid off, and they're in debt to you. Who's your daddy? Starting to say it like that smokes, man
