Binge Drinking in College

article image placeholderUploaded by @katiecal
You go out Friday, Saturday night, if not going out on Wednesday and Thursday too. And it's kind of crazy to me, like how normalized it is here because nobody really ever thinks twice about getting drunk and going to a party. That's just like an average night. I enjoy going to parties. I enjoy drinking and having a good time with my friends, but honestly, it gets to be a lot sometimes

But you really gave me some new perspective because I've always heard the term binge drinking and I've always thought of it as extremely excessive, but not simply like three to four drinks or so. Because for someone like me who has a very high tolerance, I actually have to drink a decent amount to even get a buzz going

And it's literally probably half of what the average College student does on Friday night to get drunk, which was just, like, mind blowing to me. And some of my friends and I were talking about it. We were like, what the h***? Like, this is what we do. And it's considered binge drinking. It's considered unhealthy, and some form of. It could be some form of alcoholism. And we just were like, what?

And I'm like, I know even for the people who have the easiest studies, I mean, that's debatable because some people say, oh, English or general material, sociology or, I don't know, business major or some of the other things are so easy and you have extra time. But even with those majors, you still have a lot of reading, you still have a lot of work to do. And so I wonder if people just are okay with not necessarily

Like, you're saying, one Mississippi, two, and this girl ends up drinking six, seven shots at once, just chugging and chugging away. And then you see other people who would carry pens with them and they would Mark their hands to remind them throughout the night of how many shots they've had. And those moments are when you really realize this is terribly messed up because what you have is a group of people that are actively trying to black out. That's what I saw

Yeah. I go to, like, probably what could be, like, would be considered a party school. I think, especially when I first got here, I just noticed that it was so, like, ingrained in the culture. That was kind of like what you did every Friday and Saturday night. And it's interesting, too, when you talk about binge drinking, because it's not just, like, really large amounts of alcohol at one time

This is a really good topic to talk about. I go to also a really big party school. I go to UCSB and I do feel like it's a really big prominent problem here. People usually drink Tuesdays through Saturdays, like Sunday and Mondays only days off, Tuesdays and Thursdays because you have your TGS with your sororities and the frat. And then Wednesdays because Wednesday wine, Wednesday you got a drink and then Friday, Saturday, it's the weekend. So there's honestly barely even a break

So I really couldn't agree with you more. Binge drinking is such a huge thing in College, and it can really catch up to you if you aren't careful about it. Like, there really just should not be any reason that a bunch of young adults get so drunk that they black out and not even remember these years of their life. Not even remember College. That's the scariest idea to me that I could graduate College and not even remember the best nights of my life

But how is this how far we've gotten? Like, we've gone to this point where people think it's okay to roofy people or people think it's okay to feed them alcohol so that they can get them in their bed? That's not okay. And I don't know. It's just that it doesn't seem as important because we're in College and we're drunk and it's fine. But it's not. It's never been okay

But this semester, I've honestly been taking it a lot slower because I have work, I have school, I have other things I have going on in my life. And the amount of times I was hungover going to work last semester, I just got so sick of it. And I was like, I can't do this anymore. This is too hard

I go to Washington State University, which is also pretty big party school. That's its main reputation. And I would say it's a pretty big thing here as well. And I also do just didn't really realize that it was so common, especially with the everyday occurrences of just always parties going on. So it is very interesting to see how binge drinking is such a prevalent thing in such young people
