Hidden disabilities?

article image placeholderUploaded by @JordanTepper
I used to listen to a lot of concerts. I listened to a lot of music. I think it really happened when I was working at a dog kennel for a couple of years, and I did wear hearing protection at times, but I think a lot of that happened because I didn't wear hearing protection, so I kind of did it to myself unknowingly at the time. So, my question comes is, do you have a hidden disability?

What is your hidden disability?

It's broken in two spots, popped every tendon in my foot. And the only way that and the way it broke, it broke high up on my foot, which they said they never see. And it is because when I took that step, I tucked toes underneath my foot like you're tripping almost. But I put full weight on it because I thought I was taking a regular step and tried to walk on the top side of my foot even though I was standing erect

Like big money, big money, somebody's b*******, just switch it off or turn it down. I like that idea. But what would help it, honestly, is just more people knowing about it and more funding for sure. Because it's not going to have the funding that these other well known diseases have. This, I guess, is another thing that we have in common

And my mother would also randomly call my name to see if I was losing my hearing. So I'd be, like, playing dolls with my sister or something, and she would yell Angela and scare me half to death. And as long as she saw me jump and respond, she was like, who. She can hear

Yeah. Holy moly. That's, like, that has had been pretty hard for you, growing up. Having having that and dealing with that. Wow. The only way to cure it is for you to actually go deaf. Wow. Choices, decisions. Well, it seems like you have found a way to work with it, Jeez. Yeah. One time my medicines gave me, like, vertigo, so I stopped the medicine. But you don't have that option

Were you looking at always watching out for your mom to see if, like, if she's gonna do it right now or she's just yelling at you. I hear you about the happy hours or the, you know, those time. I mean, I don't really go to any conventions or anything like that award ceremonies, but just to mix and mingle, that can be frustrating too. Walking up to a random person and saying, like, hey, how are you?

But then when I couldn't extend my arm, I knew something was really, really wrong. And so I went to the doctor, and I had broken my radial head in my elbow. And at that point, there was nothing that they could really do to intervene because it had been three weeks and it had already started healing. So they just decided to let it go ahead and heal. And I went to physical therapy, and I did all that stuff

And it's already weird because no, it's probably better if we don't sit outside and it's hot. No hiking trails right now is a bad idea for me. Or, yeah, I might disappear for two days, but that's okay. Two or three days, because that's okay. I'm just in bed. That's the awkward part. But because it's progressive, when I was a kid, I maybe had at first, like one or two a year, literally

Oh, this is a great, great awareness. Well cast, because there are so many hidden disabilities that people have, and it stresses the importance of why we should show up with grace, kindness, patience, compassion, in, and a spirit of seeking to understand and assuming the best of intent. Thank you for sharing some of yours with us

I actually had one sales manager ask me, it's like, Are you Add? And I was like, I had never been diagnosed, but I think so. And they gave me some suggestions to stay on task, which helped. And happy birthday to your son. My daughter's birthday is next Saturday. We did her birthday today and she's going to be eight, and so we had her friend running around the house. It's a lot of fun

Happy birthday to your daughter. I admit I'm making an assumption with your daughter's birthday being next weekend. I can completely understand why you all are having her birthday this weekend. Man I would say that my son's birthday being May 20, that it has generally been challenging for us to plan birthdays for him, more so when he was under the age of ten. Because under the age of ten, you're still in this space of inviting the whole class type deal

So when I was listening to your response here, something came to mind. This is something I experienced, and this may not apply at all, but I wanted to throw it out there just in case it offers any more insight into what you experience, for whatever it might be worth. There's something called auditory processing disorder, and you can have exceptional hearing with your ears, but there is a difference of processing between what the ears hear and what the brain receives and how it makes sense of it

@JordanTepper

And the first is when I tell someone that there are invisible illnesses and disabilities. First, please remember that I'll repeat it a few times when we have interactions and so on, but I don't want to spend our entire friendship, whatever it is, reiterating this again and again and again. Just accept that there are these things going on

It's Sunday. So I'm really glad that you shared that. I think that was wonderful for you to share your disabilities. I actually can resonate Kitha lot of what you said. There are a lot of disabilities that we don't think about as disabilities. I was reading this book one day and it was talking about learning disabilities and it was talking about how there are several minds and that a lot of them are overlooked

We had ten little girls running around the house. It was an ice cream themed birthday. So we had like a cardboard ice cream truck that they colored on and they made beaded necklaces and bracelets. And then we set up an ice cream buffet bar. It was 2 hours of chaos. It was a lot of fun. Thank you so much. And happy birthday to your boy

Like, my mom does kind of the same thing, but she's in her seventy s and I know that she doesn't hear me because she gives me a blank stare. And do you understand what I just said to you? Did you hear it? She's like, no, but also if I don't notice it, she won't say anything. And she'll be like, she has no idea what I just said. I'm type two diabetic
