INVITING WONDER | In The News - The mental benefits of seeking awe

article image placeholderUploaded by @hope
Welcome to where the light gets in. This week we've been talking about wonder, inviting wonder, bringing it into our lives. And today I want to look at how this conversation has been handled in journals and articles and in the news. And I found a really good article in Psychology today and I've linked it here in the description and the title of the article is the mental benefits of seeking awe, and I want to read a particular paragraph here

Hi debra. What a wonderful prompt for us to talk about in terms of mental peace, mental health. Something similar to awe is something that I read about called glimmers. They are like small moments of joy or peace that arise from appreciating simple things like the colors of a rainbow, the scent of a flower, the sound of ring. Glimmers and triggers are some things that spark positive feelings, and triggers are absolutely the opposite

For adults, I think it's that ability to quiet your mind enough to know a nuanced shift in it, where something brings it a little joy. Because if our mind's racing about what we have to do next and what we're upset about and all the responsibilities, we're moving at a pace that doesn't allow for the magic of that glimmer. And you're right. Like the word triggered is triggering

When I boil the milk, I just love to watch it come up. You know, the way it boils, bubbles, and then comes up. I don't know why, but I just love that. Or maybe there is a connection of some sort of auspiciousness with it. Because in our traditions, some of our traditions in India, or even when we are moving into a new house, we boil the milk as a ritual

And, you know, if an administrator walked in your room and you had just sat down at your desk for, you know, five minutes, you know, just to kind of take in your environment and give yourself, like, a quick little rest, you jump up immediately because you need to be looking busy. You need to be, you know, the kids need to be looking busy, and no one is really allowed to just stop, you know, and be calm
