What Happened to Neo Soul Music? You Wouldn’t Believe the Answer🎼

article image placeholderWhy 'Neo Soul' Ended - Here's Why
So the producer, I don't remember his name. I think he produced D'Angelo and a few more. And he's the one who coined the term neo soul. And neo typically means new. He said these were new soul artists. It was different, fresh. So what happened? How come we don't see them anymore? And how come they're not making music anymore? Or if they are, they're just touring around and we don't see anyone taking up that mantle. Right?

It's funny that this came up now because I was listening to Will Smith. He's got a new podcast out called the Classic 88. And I listened to the first episode when he talked about, obviously, like, the beginnings of hip hop and how it wasn't going nowhere. It was not a fad, it wasn't going nowhere, and it's still here as we're celebrating hip hop 50 years later

And I also agree with you said, too, the fact that she's still able to have people show up off of the miseducation of Lauryn Hill is just astounding. And at the same time, it shows that she doesn't have that catalog of other records. I remember she was part of the Fujis. I was playing some of their old songs yesterday, and she was great on, you know, Wyclef and Pras are definitely great artists, but Lauren's voice and her lyricism really stood out

Lots of great neo soul still being made. DVSN, Khalid, Moses Sumney #music #replies

But because of the way music has changed, both in the way artists get it out there and the way listeners pick it up, they don't call themselves Neo soul, and those are artists like DVSN, Moses, Sumney, Aloe, Black, Khalid, and just more than I can name quickly, but they're definitely in that neo soul space. But again, for both artists and listeners, we aren't using categories in the way that we used to

But I don't know, I guess each kind of music has its popularity period. It reaches a peak and kind of fades out because again, I remember early ninety s, it seemed like when I went to a couple of clubs, I heard a lot of Chicago, I guess Chicago house music being fused with electronic sound effects. Like, I don't know

Excuse me, hip hop and so many other genres, actually. And I've always been a person who loved any kind of music. Anyway, many mornings I'm listening to 90s rock and then by evening I'm listening to Neo soul. So, yeah, thank you so much for your contribution to my swell. You take care. Bye

Thank you, Javon. It's so interesting because I just finished responding to the other Javon about the music out in the UK. So I'm glad that you mentioned it, because I was saying that we found some music from the UK that we really, really like. And like you said, it's something that has struck them in the. So it could be that they held onto it, because we don't really see that here in America that often

So, yeah, the music scene in the UK is always been, I would say, top tier and even ahead of its time, if you will, or at least ahead of America, I'll say that

And I don't think that today's culture could get on that, because to them, that's foreign. Love, romance, that's foreign. We're living in a social media age where it's all about DMs, text messages. They don't know what it's like to have a man approach you

That is what gifted artists are up against in today's music society, music industry, because the gifted artists won't compromise. And they're being pushed to the side for people that are willing to compromise their dignity, their future, their self respect and everything else in order to be famous. And it's so sad to see that type of decline in our society. So thank you so much. This was great

Hey, Tanya, you bring up an excellent point as well. Yeah. The people who are making music today, they were not exposed to true love, at least I don't think so because we're definitely in a hookup culture. So the type of songs they gravitate towards or that's made popular are hookup type of songs or drug songs or that type of type of music. Whereas in the 90s we loved art, we loved our culture, we loved love. Even the movies reflected that

And I think I've mentioned it one time before in a discussion where I said no one wants to use their true voice anymore, their real voice, to sing. Don't be afraid to sing or get those vocal lessons. But with technology, you can do anything. Even with technology, there are people who letting it write their books, and I'm so against that. I am so against that. Technology definitely has its uses
