Former Teacher Says " We Are Breeding a NARCISSISTIC Society… 😬Let’s Hear Her Out

article image placeholderWhy I Quit Teaching Gen Z! - A Story of Little Things That Made a Big Difference
Hey, this is Erica at Bumbun's book pick and a former teacher says that we are breeding a narcissistic society. So I was on YouTube and lately there have been several social media posts from teachers and former teachers who are just not pleased with the school system in general. And so this video was in my algorithm today. I guess we could say her name is Trish because her handle name is teacher therapy with Trish or by Trish. So we'll just call her Trish

Again, it also depends on family influence because a lot of the time, families right now do have to work two jobs and parents can't be as great of an influence on their children as they would like. So that's where social media comes in

When you try to apply what's meant for an individual student outside a classroom to the entire classroom, it essentially requires you to stop managing that entire classroom, to address that individual student and treat it like it is more important to handle whatever gripe or issue they have, regardless of how severe or not it is, as opposed to managing the entire class

And there are some things we understand about even though you've been in school, there are some things we understand about running a school and managing a classroom and doing best for these kids in a larger context that you will never understand. No matter how much we explain it to you. You just don't have the context to do it

The administration is running away from that. In general, teachers are overworked and have less authority embedded in their jobs. Districts are afraid of litigation. The laws or the way schools are funded make it more difficult to manage with schools with a sense of authority. And we are very reluctant to change those things. I don't know if it's because of ideologies or because it's just a lot of red tape or the inertia of these laws, and people are kind of afraid to change them

I believe there's many parts that's contributing to tweens and teens acting this way. But, yeah, for sure, there's many different influences than just home and, yeah, thank you for contributing

@kwa

So this is just one of many stories, though not every teacher's story. This is probably just her venting, more than likely, which I'm hearing a lot of. But thank you so much for your contribution. Bye

It's saying kids are this and adjusting when it's really a few of many, whether it's tendencies or not, and adjusting the system as a whole to meet that as if a lot of kids were. So it's not that she, as a professional, I understand where she's coming from. I just think it needs to be taken a couple of steps back and say, this is what we as institutions want to see in our classrooms, as a first step outside of this label

And yes, the end goal is to do more for the students, but really the point is you need to take two or three steps back and make sure you have a functioning school before you start chasing your tail because that's kind of how we got here. That's all I'm saying. So it's not church's fault, it's not your fault
