Is Tipping Out of Control?

article image placeholderUploaded by @heidi
I'm sure we have all noticed that the cost of living is going up right now. I recently left my job as a hair salon assistant, and one of the things my ex boss would do is specifically tell me to upcharge clients she knew didn't tip, or if they were a new client, she would make me add notes in their new files saying that that person doesn't tip. And to next time, we were going to charge them $10 more

You. I've been in the service industry 25 years or more. Yes. Bartenders, servers, busters, you name it. Yes, here. But I also believe if you are the owner, no. No tipping. Because you're making profit out of everybody else. It that part, no. And it's tax free from them. But thank you. But yes, everyone should be tipping their bartenders and servers and whoever else. Hi, Heidi. Great question. My name's Peter. I'm from London, England. And our tipping culture is quite different to that. In the US. We don't really tip people in bars, we do tip in restaurants. But I think that you're right. Everyone should have be paid a livable wage. And then tipping is like a bonus. Bankers get bonuses, CEOs get bonuses. So in the service industry, tipping should be a bonus, not part of your livable wage

I think if I go to a restaurant and I don't get good service, it's the difference between me giving somebody $5 and me giving somebody $50, it's up to me how much I want to tip them. It shouldn't be what they live and die by. And that's so much of what's happening. Waiters get paid, what, three, $4 an hour? And then everything else is tips, and some people don't tip
