There would be rumors about how some would fall in love and would never make it back on the ship. It's always so tempting, even if it's just to imagine staying behind and living a whole new life. I did make it back on time. I was wearing months away from getting out and I wasn't going to mess it up. At least not here. Taipan, on the other hand, almost cost me my honorable discharge and my GI bill

Part 2 The East Timor perspective

There isn't a club or bar to speak of. There wasn't even drama or any tension. There was a silent calm in the air. The pressure from the day's work eased off in our muscles and in our minds. We did good work, and we were grateful to use whatever resources our time, flesh, blood and sweat to make a difference. We slept dreamless that night. Everything else was made irrelevant. Hello, slow
