My doctor, who is a non native English speaker, wrote this in my chart the other day. Mrs. Hayes lost few pounds. When we drop the letter A in this case, the doctor is saying this is unusual or unexpected. He could have finished the sentence by indicating in what way the weight loss was unusual or unexpected, and it would make perfect sense. So it could say in his notes, mrs. Hayes lost few pounds, even though she only eats once a week

Little change in letters - add or drop the article "a" - big change in meaning. #esl #speakingEnglish #writingEnglish #learningEnglish
