Media & Misdiagnosis: A Dangerous Trend

I think it's really great that there's a lot more awareness regarding mental health, mental wellness. But one of the things that I'm seeing in the profession is people either prematurely diagnosing themselves based off of internet information from people that are not licensed professionals or people just using the words because they're trendy, such as anxiety or depression or suicidal ideation

Hey, Doctor April, it's so great to meet you here and thank you for sharing this very vital information. It's so important that people hear this. I am a yoga therapist. My mom is actually a social worker, so I grew up I see that you're a social worker worker as well. So I grew up with hearing the troubles of the world, so to speak, just as you're speaking about from my mother and my sister is in the psychology field

It is normal to be sad if something makes you sad. It's normal to be confused at certain times. It's normal to have stress or anxiety at certain times

Yeah, I absolutely share in your assessment of all of this. I was just discussing this with someone else. I feel like I have so many similar conversations with very like minded people, so I forget who I'm talking to with about them. But, yeah, this need for our society to just pathologize the normal ebb and flow of human experiences, something that's really sad, and you're completely right that the media has sensationalized mental health diagnoses, which is really sad
