What About Addiction in the Family?
And a lot of time it's done in hiding or a place that's socially acceptable, but yet they're really dependent upon that alcohol or those drugs. Sometimes it manifests itself in terms of a person being prescribed medication from a doctor that's addictive. And they rationalize their taking of the drug because the doctor said it was something they needed. And basically they become dependent upon those pills

A lot of times people felt crazy within themselves or they felt that they had some mental health issue like anxiety or something like that, depression, and they were going to get help for that. But they were far away from thinking about getting help with their addiction in terms of alcohol or drugs. And so a lot of times they got into treatment in a whole different kind of way than what they expected

Him. Oh, Barbara, I thank you so much for putting this out tonight, both of your swells. It just brings me to a heavy hearted feeling because this was part of my life experience with a mate. The things that you spoke about when it comes to children and problems and things said and done and things that kids should never hear or see, they were seared in all of us except the one that had the problem, the addiction. He got to miss it all

They have to want something different for themselves. And a lot of times what they'll do is they'll say, yes, I want something different. Yes, I want to do the treatment program or I'm going to stop drinking, stop drugging on my own. I've done it in the past, so I can do it now. But what they don't understand is that maybe they've done it in the past but they didn't stay stopped

And basically what that all means is that someone who's not drinking actively at the moment or not drugging actively at the moment and what they're doing, they have an expression called white knuckling it which means they're just hanging on for dear life because they're not getting treatment, they're not making any particular changes

I so appreciate this reply. And once I collect my thoughts here, I probably will message you directly, just because, like you had mentioned, there definitely needs to be action behind the words. And it's more of addiction replacement now, not of substances, but other things to distract from what's really going on. So I do appreciate this and like I said, I probably will message you directly. Bye
