The Death of Hobbies: Has a side hustle ruined your beloved hobby?

article image placeholderThe strange, sad side effect of side hustles
A lot of people realized that once they put all the money into it, nothing was coming back and it was time to take a step back. And when you actually are making money from it, people may be paying you. You feel like you're on a deadline, and then it starts to feel like a job and then all of a sudden that fun just seems to creep and creep away. Hobbies should be done for pleasure

Excessive Entrepreneurship

So now the new hobby is finding ways to make money to be able to enjoy yourself. So it's an unfortunate reality we live in, but I think this is what happens when you have a country that thinks industry is the end all, be all for its residents

I volunteer for literary magazines as a reader when they have submissions and you decide what goes in the magazine. But freelance writing is a whole different beast because it's like you have to be able to be paid. Like nonfiction writing is really good to me when it's most immersive, where you're when you just don't do the research. You go to the places you talk to people and every kind of sentence you write has that context behind it

But I decided a year or two ago that I will leave my hobbies as fun things because they are things to divert your attention and to give you a break. And so my crocheting, my knitting, even reading books, they have now been placed in my life as things I love to do as hobbies. I don't want to make a job of it at all. I'm a writer and author, so I prefer to continue to do those. That brings me joy

And so I'm trying to kind of hold steady here with my belief that this hobby in particular, or should remain a hobby just because I don't want the fun to be taken out of it, as so many people have mentioned

Hello, this is Lady B, and I certainly enjoyed listening to your podcast. I'm pretty new to this app. And I'll tell you something, I'm an old school. I'm a baby boomer. And I must say I kind of agree with you. I think it all depends upon who the person is that's actually doing the hobby, and it also depends on actually what they're doing. Myself, I am a doll maker. I make so many things, business dolls
