Art life

Hi, it's Rachel back with The Daily Swell. So today I'm thinking about the role that art plays in our life. It can be something that we are purely interested in for aesthetic reasons or or maybe also because of the emotional experience that it creates for us. Or maybe even because it inspires us to act or think about the way we are existing or aspire to exist in the world

Art absolutely provides healing, and here's why

Thinking, when is this all going to end? How is this all going to end? There's been riots and protests there in good old America, and you have the virus spreading and spiking, and people seem to be confused on both sides. Unfortunately, they made it into a political issue. That's why I returned to the arts. For me, it's home. I feel at home when I pick up my pen and paper and I start writing. There's a healing there

Yes, art can definitely help people escape from the despair of the world. It can also add to it. It's important to look at what type of art you're talking about. If you're talking about paintings, if you're talking thinking about classical works of art, yes, they can really help people. Video games, comic books, anime, manga. All these creations can help people cope through the difficult times of 2020. But there is a catch to this

That feeling of despair when you introduce the art, whatever it may be, it gives your brain. Now I'm no brain scientist, but I think it gives you that side of your brain some relief. It lets it take a break because the other side of the brain starts to act and become active and lets the other side rest. That's just my way of seeing it. I'm sure other people can word it in a more intelligent way to give you an example

I can tell you right now I'm a theater artist and an actor, film and direct. And right now, all the theaters are closed. However, the acting community has come up with a way to create theater on the Internet, usually via Zoom and some unbelievably creative ways of making new work on Zoom coming to fruition. And some of the things I've seen, it's just been amazing

My husband kind of bullied me out of the house. But I am an artist. I've been an artist since I was probably two years old. And sometimes the very last thing that I want to do when I'm feeling in despair is to make art. But on the flip side of that, it's also the most cathartic thing that I've done or do. In my case, when I talk about making art, I paint and draw

I think that art often helps us interpret or make sense of the inexplicable

I know that this swell is a couple of months old, but I think the answer that everybody in the in the swell has in the thread has basically come to is that yes. Pardon the announcements in the background. I'm sitting in the airport right now, but I think short answer yes, but for myself, art can, can, can, can, can art provide hope in times, creativity and the expression of art helps us not only interpret tough situations, but make sense of it
